In every one of those cases there are two build records, two parts channels and two separate structures, and a repair that treats them as one vehicle goes wrong quickly. The first thing we establish on an agency unit is which structure took the load: the chassis rails, the subframe that carries the body, the body itself, or a piece of mounted equipment that transferred force into one of the other three.

Say the limit out loud, because agency fleets ask for things we do not do. We do not perform engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, drivetrain repair, DOT inspection certification or emission testing, and we do not provide telematics, fleet consulting or driver training. We also do not perform pump, aerial or ladder certification testing on fire apparatus. What this facility does is body, paint, structural and equipment install: module and body panels, compartment doors, roll up shutters, subframe and mount repair, rear sills, cab sheet metal, glass surrounds, reflective and chevron markings, full refinish, and installation and remounting of the hardware that lives on these bodies. That is a real and deep scope. It is simply not a mechanical scope, and a maintenance yard reading this page deserves to know the split before it writes a purchase order.

Ambulance modules are the most instructive example of how these bodies fail. A Type I module is welded aluminum extrusion with bonded or riveted skins, carrying eight to twelve compartment doors, and it is bolted to a subframe on the chassis rails through isolating mounts. Those mounts are the entire story. A module that has started cracking at the upper corners of the compartment openings, or at the transition where the module meets the cab, is almost never suffering from an impact. It is a unit with 300,000 hard urban miles whose mounts have compressed or loosened, so the module has begun taking chassis twist directly. Welding those cracks closed and returning the unit to service produces the same crack ninety days later in a slightly different place. The correct repair addresses the mount condition first and the crack second, and it is one of the few repairs where telling an agency the true scope costs us the quick job and earns the fleet.

Buses split into two entirely different construction families and the difference matters on every estimate. A school bus from Blue Bird, Thomas Built or IC is body on frame: a formed steel cage with riveted or bolted steel side panels organized into rub rail bands, and those rub rails are structural rather than decorative, which is why a side impact repair on a school bus is a panel and rail job with a documented rivet pattern. A transit bus from Gillig, New Flyer or Nova is the opposite: a semi monocoque stainless or steel cage with bonded fiberglass exterior panels, so panels come off the bond line rather than off fasteners and a repair is a laminate and bonding job. Shuttle and paratransit units are a third case, a fiberglass and aluminum cutaway body on an E-450 or 4500 chassis, usually with a Braun or Ricon wheelchair lift whose mounting into the floor and door post is a structural detail.

The equipment on these vehicles is where a lot of the real work sits. Fire apparatus bodies carry roll up compartment shutters from AMDOR or Robinson that jam when a body corner is out of square, hose beds, ladder racks and pump panel enclosures. Refuse bodies carry a hopper, a packer and a tailgate hinge group that takes enormous cyclic load. Sweepers from Elgin, Tymco or Global carry a hopper and broom housings that corrode from the inside out because of what they collect. Utility and bucket trucks put a boom pedestal into a subframe, so any pedestal movement is a subframe repair rather than a boom repair. Patrol units, meaning Police Interceptor Utility, Tahoe PPV and Durango Pursuit, are unibodies carrying an upfit: push bumper, partition, console, light bar and a rear equipment tray, and after a pursuit impact the upfit mounting points are as much of the repair as the sheet metal is.

Our ambulance module keeps cracking at the compartment corners. Why?

We inspect and correct mount condition first, then repair the cracks, then refinish. It costs more once and much less over the life of the unit.

Is a school bus panel repair the same as a transit bus panel repair?

No, they are opposite constructions. A school bus is body on frame with riveted or bolted steel panels organized into structural rub rail bands, so the repair carries a documented rivet pattern. A transit bus is a semi monocoque cage with bonded fiberglass panels, so the repair is a bond line, laminate and refinish job. Quoting one like the other is how agencies end up with a panel that works loose.

Can you reinstall our upfit after a patrol unit collision?

Yes. Push bumper, partition, console, light bar, rear equipment tray and the wiring that serves them are part of the repair rather than an accessory list, because on a unibody patrol vehicle their mounting points are structural. We photograph the upfit as received, repair the structure to procedure, then remount and re terminate the circuits so the unit leaves in the configuration it arrived in.
