Decal and Graphics Replacement: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Factory RV graphics are printed vinyl film with a laminate over the print. That construction has a shorter service life than the paint underneath it, and in this UV load the gap is significant. Printed inks fade faster than sprayed pigment, especially in the red and orange end of the spectrum, and the film itself shrinks as plasticizers migrate out.

Shrinkage is what produces the two symptoms owners describe most. The film pulls back from its own edges, exposing a border of paint that has not seen the same UV and therefore reads as a different color. And the film loses flexibility until it cracks rather than moves, which on a coach that flexes over every driveway apron means a crazed pattern across the whole graphic.

The other common failure is at the boundary between graphic and clear. A decal edge is where water and UV concentrate, so it is where clear coat failure tends to start. That is the reason we check clear adhesion before quoting a graphics job: installing a $4,000 graphics set onto clear that is releasing means the new film lifts with it.

The first question is whether the manufacturer still supplies the kit. Some builders keep graphics available for a decade or more and will cut a set to your VIN. That is the cleanest path: correct shapes, correct scaling, correct registration between panels, and a printed set that goes on the way the factory intended. Lead time is typically 10 to 25 business days.

Where the brand is gone or the kit is discontinued, the set gets reproduced. That means photographing the existing graphics with scale references, measuring every element and every relationship between elements, rebuilding the artwork as vector, color matching the print to the faded original or to the owner's preferred correction of it, and printing on cast film with a UV laminate. It is more work and it produces a set that fits your specific coach.

Partial replacement is possible and is often the wrong call. A new film section next to a set that has faded for nine years will not match, and the mismatch is more visible than the original damage. Old film comes off with controlled heat and mechanical removal, then the adhesive residue comes off with a solvent appropriate to the paint system underneath. Both steps are where damage happens if they are rushed: too much heat softens clear, and an aggressive solvent will craze it.

Then you find out what the coach actually looks like. Under a decal, paint has been shielded from UV for a decade. The area is often noticeably darker and glossier than the surrounding surface, which is called ghosting, and it means the new graphics have to either cover the same footprint exactly or the panel has to be brought to a uniform appearance.

Covering the same footprint is the cheap answer and it works when the new layout matches the old. Where the owner is changing the design, the panel gets corrected to reduce the differential, and where the differential is too large for polishing to resolve, that panel is a refinish candidate.
