Every other vehicle family on this site has a frame under it. Vans do not, and that single difference changes how they are diagnosed, repaired and documented. Load does not stop at a bumper beam and die. It travels around the ring. So when a van comes in with what looks like a modest rear corner hit, the meaningful question is whether the rear door aperture is still square and whether the sill and floor pan behind it moved, because the symptom the owner will notice a month later is a barn door that will not latch or a sliding door that binds at the top roller. We measure the aperture and the floor before writing sheet metal, not after.

The second thing unibody construction dictates is that repairs are procedure gated. Modern van rings mix high strength and ultra high strength steels, and there are places on a Sprinter where sectioning is allowed at a specified location with a specified weld type and places where the panel is a full replacement or nothing. Heat is the enemy: over heating a high strength section quietly destroys the property the engineer specified it for, and nothing about the finished paint will reveal it. That is why structural van work here follows a written procedure with weld type and location recorded in the file, and why certified welding is part of the intake question set rather than an afterthought. It is also why we will decline to pull a ring back with heat when the correct answer is a sectioned replacement, even when heat would be faster and would look identical when the paint went on.

Camper van conversions add a layer on top of all of that. A Winnebago Revel or Solis, a Storyteller Overland, an Airstream Interstate or Atlas, a Coachmen Galleria, a Thor Tellaro, a Roadtrek or a Pleasure-Way is a unibody van with an insulated, paneled and cabineted interior bonded or bolted to the sheet metal. That means a structural repair which would be four hours on an empty cargo van becomes a much larger job, because the wall panel, the insulation, the wiring loom, the cabinetry and often a water tank all have to come out to reach the inside of the panel and go back in afterward. Owners are frequently shocked by this and they should not be: the teardown is the honest majority of the labor. We quote it as teardown, structural, refinish and reassembly as separate lines so the arithmetic is visible instead of hidden in a lump sum.

Roof modifications are the other conversion specialty and they generate their own failure set. An aftermarket high roof is a molded fiberglass cap bonded over a cut factory roof and sealed at a flange, so a leak on that van is a bond line and flange question rather than a membrane question. Pop tops are a hinged fiberglass lid with a fabric bellows cut into the roof, which requires the cut edge to be reinforced or the opening will oval over time and the lid will stop sealing. Side flares cut into the body sides to widen a bed platform modify the ring itself, so any later structural repair in that area has to account for the modification. And the plainest van problem in Southern California is a roof strike: a nine foot tall high roof meets an eight foot two inch parking structure beam and the entire roof rail deforms in a line. That is a structural job even though it looks like a crease.

Electronics decide when a van is finished. Sprinters, Transits and ProMasters carry forward radar behind the lower fascia, a camera at the windshield, and blind spot sensors in the rear quarters. A bumper cover replacement, a windshield replacement or a quarter panel repair can all move a sensor out of tolerance, and a van that drives fine but has an uncalibrated radar is not a repaired van. Post repair scan and ADAS recalibration is a line item on these jobs, billed at the diagnostics rate of $285 per hour. Why does a small corner hit on a Sprinter cost more than the same hit on a trailer?

Because there is no frame under it. A van is a unibody, so the rear aperture, sills, floor pan and roof rails act as one ring and a corner load travels around that ring instead of stopping at a rail. The repair therefore includes measuring the aperture for square and correcting it, which is why a door that latches today can stop latching next month if only the visible sheet metal was addressed.

Can you just pull the damage out with heat instead of replacing a section?

Not on a high strength or ultra high strength section, and that limit is not negotiable. Over heating those steels destroys the property they were specified for and the finished paint will look identical either way, which is exactly why it gets done wrong so often. We follow a written procedure with weld type and section location recorded in the file, and where the procedure calls for replacement we replace.

My camper van conversion needs a panel repaired. Why is the estimate so large?

Because the teardown is the majority of the job. On a converted van the wall panel, insulation, wiring loom, cabinetry and sometimes a water tank all sit against the inside of the damaged sheet metal and have to come out to repair it correctly, then go back in. We list teardown, structural, refinish and reassembly separately so you can see where the hours actually go rather than reading one lump number.

The high roof cap on my conversion leaks. Is that a roof membrane job?

No, and treating it as one is why it keeps leaking. An aftermarket high roof is a molded fiberglass cap bonded over a cut factory roof and sealed at a flange, so the failure is at the bond line or the flange rather than in a membrane. The correct repair opens the flange, cleans back to sound material and re bonds. Sealant applied over the top of a failed flange buys one season.

Do you do the mechanical work on a Sprinter too?

No. We do not perform engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, drivetrain repair or emission testing on any van. Does a bumper or windshield replacement require a recalibration on my van?

On any van carrying forward radar or a lane camera, yes. The radar sits behind the lower fascia and the camera at the windshield, so replacing either component moves a sensor relative to the road. A post repair scan and ADAS recalibration is billed at the $285 diagnostics rate and is a line item on the estimate, because a van with an uncalibrated radar has not actually been returned to service.
