Why a blend is harder than a repaint

When the whole coach goes to one color, there is nothing to match. When one area goes to color, it has to agree with paint that has been on the coach for eight or twelve years. Those two jobs share a spray gun and almost nothing else.

Aged paint has drifted in three ways at once. It has lost saturation from UV. It has lost film thickness from washing and polishing, which changes how much of the underlying color and metallic reads through. And it has drifted unevenly across the coach, because the roof and the driver side upper have taken far more sun than the shaded lower panels. A blend that lands perfectly on the lower quarter can be visibly light six feet higher on the same panel.

The tool that solves this is not a code. It is a spray out card. We mix, spray a card with the same gun, tip, pressure and coat count that will be used on the coach, cure it, clear it, and then hold it against the panel in daylight and under a color corrected light. If it does not disappear, we pull a variant deck and do it again. That loop is the job.

How the blend zone is chosen

A blend zone is a decision about geometry, not about how much material someone wants to use. The new color has to reach full opacity inside the repair and then thin progressively outward until it is invisible, and the eye needs a certain amount of surface to accept that transition without seeing a boundary.

On a flat RV sidewall that means a generous zone, often two to three feet in every direction from the repair, because there is nothing on a slab side to hide a transition behind. On a coach with a body line, a rub rail or a graphic break, we blend to that feature and stop, because a hard visual line gives the transition somewhere to end.

The clear coat then goes over the entire blend zone and out to a natural boundary of its own, because a clear edge in the middle of a panel is a step that will collect dirt and eventually flag. That is why an eight inch scrape can legitimately require a five foot refinish area, and it is the single most common point of friction when a carrier's initial estimate wrote the repair without writing the blend.

Metallics, pearls and the angle problem

A solid color either matches or it does not, and you can see it in five seconds. A metallic can match at 90 degrees and shift by a full shade at 45, which is exactly the angle at which someone standing next to the coach looks at it.

That happens because the aluminum flake in a metallic orients according to how it was sprayed: gun distance, air pressure, coat wetness and how much the flake was allowed to settle before flash. Reproducing a factory orientation with a hand held gun is a technique problem, and it is why we spray the card with the same setup that will be used on the coach rather than a bench gun.

Three stage pearls add a mid coat, which adds a second variable: the number of mid coats controls the depth of the pearl, and one extra pass reads darker. On a three stage blend we build a let down panel with a stepped mid coat count so we can see exactly how many passes lands on the coach. That step is why a pearl blend carries more hours than a solid one on the same size repair.

What this line item does not include

  • We do not blend at a customer location. Blending needs booth air and a controlled flash window to avoid dry edge.
  • A blend across a body line onto a differently aged panel is a refinish of that panel, not a blend, and is estimated as such.
  • Structural or torn substrate under the damage is scoped as body or fiberglass work first.

Can you repair one scratch without painting the whole side?

Usually yes, and that is the point of a blend. What you cannot do is refinish an eight inch area and stop at eight inches. The new color needs a blend zone around it, and the clear needs to run out to a body line or an edge. Expect a refinish area measured in feet even when the damage is measured in inches.

Why did a previous repair end up a slightly different color?

Almost always because it was mixed from the paint code rather than matched to the panel, and often because no spray out card was built. A code describes the color that left the factory. Your coach has drifted from that under UV. Add a metallic whose flake was oriented differently by a different gun setup and the mismatch becomes obvious in daylight even though it looked right indoors.

How much does a spot repair and blend cost?

We document the blend zone with the panel geometry that requires it, which turns a supplement into a documented request rather than a negotiation.

Can faded paint be matched at all?

Yes, that is what the variant decks and let down panels are for. What cannot be done is matching heavily failed paint. If the clear over the area has already lost adhesion, blending into it puts new material on a foundation that is releasing, and the correct call is refinishing the panel or the section. We take film thickness and adhesion readings before recommending a blend.
