Why load bearing welding is certification gated here

A weld on a load bearing joint is not a general shop skill. It is a specific process for a specific material at a specific thickness, and getting any of those wrong produces a joint that looks correct and fails at a fraction of the design load.

That is why welding on load bearing structure is gated to a welding certified technician on this site rather than assigned to whoever is available. It is also why we ask what material we are welding before we quote. High strength chassis steel, mild steel tube, 6000 series aluminum extrusion and cast components all behave differently and none of them tolerates being treated like the others.

Aluminum is the one owners most often underestimate. Coach substructure is frequently aluminum tube, and welding it creates a heat affected zone that is permanently softer than the parent metal. A correct aluminum repair accounts for that by moving the joint and by adding section, not by laying a prettier bead.

Repairing a crack properly rather than covering it

The most common defect we correct is somebody else's plate over a crack. A doubler welded across an unground crack does not stop the crack; it moves the stress concentration to the edge of the plate and buys a season.

A correct crack repair finds both ends of the crack, drills them to stop propagation, grinds the crack out to sound metal through the full section, welds it back with the right process and filler, then adds reinforcement sized to the load path rather than to the size of the crack.

It also asks why the crack happened. A crack at a spring hanger web on a towable is almost never a material defect; it is a load path that was marginal from the factory or a coach that has run overloaded. Repairing without addressing that produces the same crack in the same place, and we will tell you when we think that is what will happen.

Fabricating parts that no longer exist

On coaches more than about ten years old, the limiting factor on a repair is usually not skill or money; it is that the part is gone. Brackets, mounts, steps, cradles, bumper sections, cargo tray structure and slide support members all reach a point where the builder no longer supplies them and no aftermarket exists.

We reverse engineer those. The remains of the original, or the mounting pattern it left behind, become a pattern; the replacement is built from matching material and profile, fitted, welded and finished. Where the original design failed, the replacement gets the section it should have had.

This is also the answer of last resort on a cap or a panel that cannot be bought, and it is worth understanding that fabrication is not automatically cheaper than a purchased part. It is labor instead of parts. On a $900 bracket it is usually a bargain. On a $9,000 molded cap it is a judgment call, and we will show you both numbers.

Fabrication is quoted from a teardown and a pattern, never from a photograph, because the hours live in the fitting rather than in the welding. A bracket that welds in ten minutes may take four hours to fit correctly, and the fit is what determines whether the load path is right.

Where a job is partly insurance covered impact damage and partly non covered fatigue or corrosion, we write them as separate lines. That is the honest way to present it and it is also the way that gets the covered portion approved without dragging the rest into the conversation.

Can you weld a cracked RV frame?

Yes, and correctly means more than laying a bead. Both crack ends are stop drilled, the crack is ground out through the full section to sound metal, and it is welded with the process and filler the parent material requires by a welding certified technician. Then reinforcement is sized to the load path. A plate welded over an unground crack is not a repair, it is a delay.

Do you weld aluminum coach framing?

Yes, once the grade is confirmed. Aluminum welding creates a heat affected zone permanently softer than the parent metal, so a correct repair moves the joint away from the highest stress point and adds section to compensate. That is engineering rather than technique, and it is why we confirm material before quoting rather than after starting.

Can you fabricate a part that is no longer available?

Usually. Brackets, mounts, cradles, steps, bumper sections, cargo tray structure and slide support members are all reverse engineered from the original remains or from the mounting pattern, then built in matching material and profile. Fabrication is labor rather than parts, so on a small bracket it is inexpensive and on a large molded assembly it is a real decision. We price both paths.

Is there anything you will not weld?

LP vessels, propane lines and fuel tanks. Those require a certified vessel facility and we send them out rather than attempt them, which is the correct answer and not a limitation we are shy about. We also do not perform hot work at a customer location under any circumstances. All welding happens inside the shop.
