Why body geometry and sensor aim are the same problem
A forward radar does not know where the road is. It knows where it is aimed relative to the vehicle centerline, and it trusts that the vehicle centerline has not changed. A collision repair that moved the structure a quarter of a degree moved the radar aim a quarter of a degree, and at 100 yards a quarter of a degree is a full lane.
The same logic applies to a windshield camera, which references the road through a piece of glass at a known angle in a known position. Replace the glass, change the bracket, or move the cowl the bracket mounts to, and the camera is looking at a different place than the software believes.
This is why calibration belongs at the end of a collision repair rather than as an unrelated service. The trigger is not whether the sensor was damaged. The trigger is whether anything the sensor references was moved, replaced or disturbed.

Static, dynamic and why we scan twice
Static calibration is done in the shop with the vehicle squared to physical targets at manufacturer specified distances and heights, on a level floor, under controlled lighting. Dynamic calibration is done by driving a prescribed route at prescribed speeds while the module learns. Many systems need both, in a specified order.
We scan at intake, before any repair. That establishes which codes and which calibration states existed before we touched the vehicle, which protects both of us: it distinguishes a pre existing fault from one the repair caused, and it documents for the carrier that the calibration requirement is real rather than added.
Then we scan and calibrate after the repair, and the post repair report goes in the file with the pre repair scan. Two reports and a target setup photograph is the record that makes a calibration line item unarguable, and it is also simply the correct way to do the work.
What this looks like on RV and van platforms specifically
Class B vans are the most sensor dense vehicles in this building. A recent Sprinter carries forward radar, a windshield camera, blind spot radar in the rear corners, and parking sensors, and the conversion on top of it sometimes adds an aftermarket camera system with its own reference.
Class A and Class C coaches vary enormously by chassis and model year. A gas chassis from 2012 may have nothing but a backup camera. A recent Freightliner or Spartan chassis may carry collision mitigation, lane departure and a tire pressure system, and the coach builder may have added a 360 degree camera on top of that with its own calibration procedure.
So the first step is establishing what the vehicle actually has, which is a scan rather than a guess from the model year. Owners are frequently surprised in both directions, and a coach that turns out to carry collision mitigation is a coach where recalibration is not optional after structural work.

- We do not perform calibration at a customer location. Static targets require a level floor and controlled lighting.
- We do not add driver assistance hardware that the chassis did not originally carry.
- Telematics and fleet tracking system configuration is outside what this facility performs.
Being explicit about the boundary is faster than discovering it at pickup. If the work you need sits outside this line item we will say so at intake and point you at the right one.

Does my RV need ADAS calibration after collision repair?
If the chassis carries driver assistance sensors and the repair moved or disturbed anything they reference, yes. That includes structural correction anywhere on the vehicle, windshield replacement on a camera equipped chassis, fascia or cap removal in front of a radar, rear corner work near blind spot sensors, and any alignment change. We scan at intake so the requirement is established with data.
How much does ADAS recalibration cost?

Why do you scan before the repair as well as after?
Because the pre repair scan is what separates a fault that already existed from one the repair introduced, and it documents that the calibration requirement is genuine rather than added on. Both reports go in the file with target setup photographs. On a claim, that record is the difference between a calibration line that is approved and one that is questioned.
Can you calibrate a camera system the coach builder added?
Often, and it depends on the system. Chassis manufacturer systems follow documented procedures we can execute with target sets. Coach builder and aftermarket 360 degree systems vary, and some have no published calibration procedure at all. We establish what the vehicle carries by scanning at intake, and tell you which systems can be brought back to specification before you authorize the repair.
