Unibody Straightening: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Why a van shell behaves differently than a coach chassis
A unibody has no rails to pull against. The shell itself is the structure, built from stamped panels of mixed grades, with designed crush zones and designed rigid zones. Load applied in the wrong place does not straighten it; it damages a different part of it.
So the work is fixture based. The shell is mounted to fixtures at manufacturer specified points and pulled in controlled directions with measurement between each step, referencing the body dimension specification rather than a generic datum.
The other difference is the metallurgy. Modern van shells mix mild steel, high strength steel and ultra high strength boron sections, and each has its own rule about whether it may be pulled, whether it may be heated, and whether it may be sectioned at all. Some sections are replace only, no exceptions, and knowing which is which is not optional.
Sectioning where the manufacturer allows it
Where a panel section is beyond straightening, it is replaced at a location the manufacturer procedure permits, with the joint type the procedure specifies. That may be a butt joint with backing, a lap with a specified overlap, or a full assembly replacement at factory seams.
Improvised sectioning is the failure mode we see most on previously repaired vans. A rocker cut and lapped in a convenient place instead of the specified place moves the crush behavior of the whole side, and it is invisible until the next event.
Welding on load bearing unibody sections is certification gated here, and the process, wire, gas and heat input follow the platform procedure rather than shop preference. Corrosion protection goes back into every cavity that was opened, which is a step routinely skipped and routinely the reason a repaired van rusts out at the repair five years later.

The conversion on top complicates everything
A bare cargo van is a straightforward unibody repair. A finished camper conversion is not, because the shell you need access to is behind cabinetry, insulation, wall panels, a water system, a lithium bank and a wiring harness someone installed by hand.
That access is real labor and it is the main reason a van conversion repair costs more than the same damage on a cargo van. We document the conversion before disassembly, label everything, and reinstall to the same layout, which on a custom build is the only way it goes back together correctly.
Where the conversion itself was damaged, that scope is quoted separately as interior work. Keeping it separate matters on a claim because carriers frequently treat aftermarket conversion content under a different coverage than the vehicle shell.

Unibody Straightening questions
Can a Sprinter based camper van shell be straightened?
Yes, within the platform rules. The shell is mounted on fixtures at manufacturer specified points and pulled against the body dimension specification with measurement between steps. What cannot be done is pulling or heating ultra high strength sections that the procedure designates replace only. Identifying material grade before deciding is the part that separates a correct repair from a cosmetic one.
Does a Class B motorhome have a frame?
Most do not in the conventional sense. Class B coaches and camper vans built on Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster platforms are unibody, meaning the shell carries the load and there are no separate rails to pull against. Class C and Class A coaches sit on a separate chassis and are handled as frame work instead, which is a different process and a different price band.
Why does the same damage cost more on a converted van?
Access. The structure needing repair sits behind cabinetry, insulation, wall panels, plumbing, a battery bank and hand built wiring. All of that comes out and goes back, documented and labeled, before and after the shell work. On a custom conversion that disassembly and reassembly is often more hours than the structural repair itself.
Will the van need sensor recalibration afterward?
Almost certainly. Sprinter and Transit platforms carry forward radar, a windshield camera, and in many cases blind spot and lane keeping sensors, all of which reference body geometry. If the geometry moved or a mounting was disturbed, the system needs a scan and a static recalibration on targets before release. We scan at intake and again after repair so the difference is documented.
How long will the van be here?
Three to eight weeks for most unibody jobs. Labor is 10 to 55 hours on the shell, but structural panels run 5 to 25 business days and Sprinter specific sections can be 3 to 8 weeks. Add the conversion disassembly and reassembly hours on a finished camper, plus the recalibration appointment at the end.
