Body Work
Dent Removal and Repair: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights
Dent removal and repair straightens localized deformation in an RV exterior panel without replacing it. On a coach that means one of three substrates: corrugated or flat aluminum siding, a Filon style fiberglass laminate bonded to foam and framing, or a molded fiberglass cap. Each one dents and each one releases differently.
What brings this in
- A crease in the sidewall with a bright line down the center where the clear coat has fractured
- A dent that has a soft hollow feel when pressed, indicating the foam core behind it has crushed
- A dimple pattern in aluminum siding that follows the framing behind it, from a strike between studs
- A gouge running horizontally at awning arm height, the single most common pattern on this list
- Paint lifting at the edge of an older dent, which means water has already entered the substrate
- A dent at the lower sidewall with tire rubber transferred onto it, from tread separation rather than contact
- A ladder or bike rack mounting foot that has pulled and left a raised bulge around each fastener
- A dent that reappears after a prior filler repair, because the substrate was never straightened

Three substrates, three completely different repairs
An aluminum sided trailer has a thin sheet, usually .024 to .032, fastened over wood or aluminum framing with an air gap and batt insulation behind it. That sheet can often be worked from behind if we can reach it, and where the corrugation is intact the panel will come back close to flat with careful dolly work and minimal filler.
A laminated sidewall is a different animal. Filon or a gel coated fiberglass skin is vacuum bonded to a block foam core and the framing, so the panel is a sandwich with no cavity. There is nothing to push against, which is why paintless techniques do not transfer to RVs. When that panel dents, the foam under it crushes and stays crushed, and the repair is a filler and fair operation over a stabilized substrate, or a section replacement if the crush is deep.
A molded cap is a laid up laminate with a gel coat surface. It does not dent so much as it stars and cracks, and pressing it back out puts the cracks into the resin behind the gel coat where they keep running. That work goes to the fiberglass program because the repair is a grind, layup and refinish, not a metal straightening operation.
- Aluminum siding, workable from behind where access exists, minimal filler
- Laminated Filon sidewall, no cavity, filler over a stabilized core
- Gel coated molded cap, laminate repair rather than dent work
- Painted steel or aluminum on a Sprinter or box body, conventional metal finishing
- Aluminum tread plate and rock guard, usually replaced rather than straightened
Why we read the back side before quoting the front
The visible dent is the smallest part of the question. What determines cost is whether the framing behind it took the load. A strike that landed directly on a stud transfers into the frame member and can split it, and a split stud under a repaired panel will telegraph a line through the finish inside a year.
So the first thing we do is get behind the area. On a towable that often means pulling an interior panel or a cabinet back. On a motorhome it may mean dropping a baggage compartment liner. That access is where the hours are, and it is also why a dent that looks identical to another dent can price at twice the labor.
We also read moisture at the dent edge. A crease that fractured the outer skin has been letting water into the core since the day it happened, and filling over a wet core produces a repair that blisters. If the reading is elevated, the core gets opened, dried and replaced before any filler goes on.
What it costs and where the hours go
The band on this page runs from a single shallow dent in reachable aluminum siding at the low end to a multi panel laminate repair with core replacement at the high end. Labor is billed at the posted body and paint rate of $210 per hour across 3 to 30 hours, plus body supplies at $5 per body hour.
The two multipliers to know about are access and blend. Access is the interior teardown needed to reach the back side. Blend is the paint operation, which is quoted separately and which on a full body paint coach can exceed the body labor, because a sidewall with no natural break point has to be carried to the next panel edge.
The priced RV systems estimate is $150 and it is credited against an authorized repair. On a dent that is money well spent, because the difference between a $700 repair and a $4,000 repair is entirely in what the back side looks like, and nobody can see that from a photograph.
Scope
What this line item does not include
- We do not perform paintless dent removal on a laminated RV sidewall. The panel is bonded to foam, so there is nothing behind it to push against.
- Impact damage that moved a structural member or changed a measured dimension is not a dent repair and is scoped at /rv-collision-repair instead.
- Refinishing the repaired area is a separate paint line item, because blend size is what drives that number, not dent size.
Being explicit about the boundary is faster than discovering it at pickup. If the work you need sits outside this line item we will say so at intake and point you at the right one.
Questions
Dent Removal and Repair questions
Can you pop a dent out of an RV sidewall without filler?
Only on an aluminum sided coach where we can reach behind the sheet. On a laminated sidewall the skin is bonded to a foam core with no cavity behind it, so there is nothing to push against and the crushed foam does not recover. That repair is a stabilized substrate with filler and fair work, then a paint blend. Anyone promising paintless work on a laminated coach has not looked behind the panel.
Is a small dent worth repairing, or can I leave it?
It depends entirely on whether the outer skin fractured. An unbroken dent is cosmetic and can wait. A dent with a bright fracture line, lifted paint or a split seam is an active water path into the core, and core damage spreads laterally and quietly. The repair triples in cost once the substrate is wet, which is the whole argument for handling it in the first season.
How do you match the paint after a dent repair?
Body work and refinishing are separate line items here. Once the panel is straight, the refinish is scoped by blend size rather than dent size, and the color is pulled by spectrophotometer and sprayed on a test card against your actual panel before anything goes on the coach. Older gel coat and oxidized clear complicate that, and we say so before we spray rather than after.
Will insurance pay for parking lot dents on an RV?
Frequently yes on a comprehensive policy, and the deciding factor is usually the deductible rather than coverage. Where the dent came from a known event we photograph and write the file so the carrier can adjust it cleanly. Where it accumulated over years of storage, carriers generally treat that as wear, and we will tell you that before you open a claim you cannot use.
