Fiberglass Roof Repair: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Fiberglass roof repair addresses a bonded laminate panel rather than a membrane. A fiberglass roof is gel coated glass reinforced plastic laminated to a foam or lauan core, so it fails by crazing, gel coat chalking and delamination from the decking beneath it. The repair is composite work, not sealant work.

What brings this in

  • A network of fine hairline cracks radiating out from a fastener or a mounting foot
  • Chalk transferring onto a hand or a rag when the dry surface is wiped
  • A dull flat patch where the surrounding roof still holds gloss
  • A hollow tone when a knuckle taps an area that should read solid
  • A raised blister that flexes under thumb pressure and springs back
  • Star cracking around an air conditioner mounting bolt
  • A visible ripple in what should be a flat plane across the panel
  • Yellowing along the bond line where the roof panel meets the sidewall

A fiberglass roof is a panel, not a membrane

On a coach with a fiberglass roof there is no sheet to peel back. The roof is a structural laminate: a gel coat surface, chopped or woven glass suspended in resin, and a core of foam or lauan, all bonded into one panel that carries load. Treating it like a membrane is the single most common error we find in prior repair work.

That changes everything downstream. There is no adhesive to release, no seam to weld and no roll of anything to buy. A fiberglass roof is repaired the way a boat hull is repaired: grind the failure out, taper the perimeter, rebuild the laminate in layers, then restore the surface over the top of it.

It also changes where the failures live. Fiberglass roofs almost never fail in the open field. They fail at penetrations, at the bond line to the sidewall, and at cracks that began as stress risers around a fastener and grew from there under years of road flex.

Crazing, chalking and what each one is telling you

Chalking is a surface condition only. Gel coat is a pigmented resin, UV breaks the resin down from the outside in, and loose pigment is what is left behind on your hand. It looks alarming and it is cosmetic. A cut and polish, or a clear coat and UV restoration, brings the surface back and buys years.

Crazing is structural news. Those hairline cracks are gel coat responding to flex in the laminate beneath it, which means something is moving that should not be. Crazing around an air conditioner mount is usually fastener load. Crazing spread across a broad field usually means the core under it has lost stiffness.

Delamination is the expensive one. When the outer skin releases from the core the panel loses rigidity, so it flexes further with every mile and opens more of the bond as it goes. Left alone it works outward until it reaches an edge and lets water into the core, at which point the panel is a replacement candidate.

  • Chalking, surface gel coat breakdown, cosmetic only
  • Star crazing at a fastener, load concentrated in one point
  • Field crazing, stiffness lost in the core beneath
  • Blistering, water or air trapped under the skin
  • Hollow tone on tap, skin released from the core
  • Edge yellowing, exposed resin at the bond line

How composite roof repair is actually performed

We map the failure before touching it, by tapping the panel on a grid and marking every change in tone with tape. That produces an outline of released area, and the outline is almost always larger than what is visible. Moisture readings go over the same grid so we know whether the core is wet as well as loose.

Sound repair means grinding the damaged laminate out to good material and tapering the perimeter at a shallow ratio so new glass can key into old. Layers go back in wet, rolled out and consolidated, and over a large area we vacuum bag the repair so the skin pulls flat against the core instead of curing with a step in it.

Surface restoration is the last stage. New gel coat is applied, blocked flat, then cut and polished until the sheen matches what surrounds it. Where the original color has drifted, and on a coach parked outdoors here it has, the repair is blended into the adjacent panel rather than stopped at a hard line.

Where fiberglass roofs cost more and where they cost less

The good news is that a fiberglass roof does not need resealing on a calendar the way a membrane does. The panel itself is the weather surface. A fiberglass roof kept sealed at its penetrations can go a very long time on nothing but washing and an occasional polish, which is a real running cost advantage.

The bad news is that when one does fail it costs more per square foot than a membrane, because the repair is skilled composite labor and cure time rather than an adhesive and a sheet. The band on this page reflects that honestly: it starts higher than the rubber roof band and it climbs faster as area grows.

Labor bills at the posted body and paint rate of $210 per hour across roughly 5 to 32 hours, and paint supplies apply at $55 per paint hour on the gel coat and blend portion. The RV systems estimate at $150 establishes the actual scope and is credited against an authorized repair.

Why a tap test comes before any quote

Composite work cannot be quoted from photographs. The visible crack is the end of the failure, not the extent of it, and the released area hiding under a sound looking surface routinely runs three or four times larger than what the eye picks up.

Tapping is unglamorous and it is the most accurate tool available for this. A released skin returns a dead hollow tone and a bonded skin returns a sharp one. The difference is unmistakable once you have heard both, and it maps the boundary in minutes without cutting into anything.

We mark that boundary, photograph it and quote to it. Where the boundary reaches a structural edge or crosses more than roughly a third of the panel, we will say that panel replacement is the better use of your money. We would rather say it before you have paid for composite hours than after.

Scope

What this line item does not include

  • We do not laminate composite outside the building. Resin cure needs a controlled temperature and humidity window, so there is no field version of this work.
  • Sidewall and cap delamination is a separate line item under fiberglass repair rather than roof work.
  • We do not lay new gel coat over a laminate that still reads wet at the core.

Being explicit about the boundary is faster than discovering it at pickup. If the work you need sits outside this line item we will say so at intake and point you at the right one.

Questions

Fiberglass Roof Repair questions

Does a fiberglass RV roof need to be resealed like a rubber one?

The panel does not, because it is the weather surface rather than a sheet bonded over one. The penetrations absolutely do. Vents, air conditioner shrouds, antennas and the sidewall bond line all carry sealant that ages on the same clock as any other roof, and that is where a fiberglass roof leaks.

Is chalky gel coat on the roof a repair or a cosmetic problem?

Cosmetic, in almost every case. Chalk is broken down resin at the surface releasing loose pigment, and it stops at the surface. A cut, polish and UV restoration brings the sheen back. What matters structurally is crazing and hollow tone, which are different conditions with different causes.

How do you find delamination that has not surfaced yet?

By tapping the panel on a grid and listening. A bonded skin rings sharp, a released skin sounds dead and hollow. We mark every transition with tape until the released area has an outline, then take moisture readings over the same grid. That gives a boundary to quote against instead of a guess.

What does fiberglass roof repair cost compared to a membrane roof?

More per square foot, and less over the life of the coach. The band here starts higher than the rubber roof band because composite labor and cure time replace adhesive and sheet goods. Against that, a fiberglass roof does not need a reseal cycle on the field, only at its penetrations.

Can crazing around the air conditioner be fixed without removing the unit?

No. The crazing is a load pattern coming from the mounting bolts, so the unit comes off, the laminate is repaired properly at the fastener field, and the air conditioner is reset on a fresh gasket with correct torque. Repairing around a mounted unit leaves the cause in place.
