The four things we find behind intermittent faults

First, rodent damage. The San Gabriel Valley has a healthy rodent population and a stored coach is an attractive nest with soft insulation to chew. Damage concentrates behind wheel wells, in the generator bay and above the water heater where the harness is warm.

Second, chafe. Any harness routed near a slide rail, a jack, a frame penetration or a moving panel eventually wears through if it was not properly loomed and secured. The symptom is a fault that only appears when the coach is in motion or the slide is partway out, which is why we provoke it in the bay rather than testing statically.

Third, prior repairs. Uninsulated butt crimps, household wire nuts, tape splices and a scotch lock tapped onto a live circuit are all things we pull out of coaches regularly. They work for a season and then corrode or vibrate loose.

Fourth, the panel itself. A fuse block or breaker panel with heat damage at a position has a high resistance connection, and that position will keep failing no matter how many fuses you feed it.

How the repair is done so it stays fixed

Damaged sections get replaced, not patched. Where a run is chewed or chafed, we pull new wire of the correct gauge through the same path with proper loom and strain relief, and we secure it away from whatever destroyed the original.

Terminations are adhesive lined heat shrink crimps or proper mechanical terminations at a bus, never a bare crimp and never tape. In a vibrating, humid vehicle a sealed termination is the difference between a repair that lasts and a repair that reappears next spring.

Where the panel is compromised, it is replaced rather than reconditioned. Most coaches carry a WFCO or Progressive Dynamics combination panel that includes the converter, which means the panel job usually addresses the DC distribution, the AC breakers and the charging output at once. That sounds like scope creep and it is actually the cheaper way to do it.

Rodent damage, cost and the insurance question

Rodent damage is the one wiring repair that is frequently a claim. Whether it is covered depends on your policy language, because carriers treat animal damage inconsistently and some exclude it outright. We photograph nesting evidence, the chewed runs and the affected systems, and write the file so an adjuster can read the causation instead of guessing at it.
