Oxidation, chalk and crazing are three different surface failures

Owners describe all three as faded, and they need different work. Oxidation is the resin at the very surface breaking down under UV, which scatters light and reads as dullness. Chalk is oxidation gone far enough that the degraded resin has released its pigment and comes off on your hand. Crazing is a mechanical failure: a network of fine cracks through the gel coat layer, caused by flex, by a gel coat sprayed too thick at the factory, or by years of thermal cycling.

Oxidation and light chalk are surface conditions on an intact layer, and if the gel coat below them still has thickness, restoring gloss is a finish operation. Crazing is not. Crazing is a crack pattern, and abrasives do not close cracks. They remove material until the cracks are gone, which only works if the gel coat is thick enough to lose that much, and on a twenty year old coach it very often is not.

The fourth condition is worn through. This is what a decade of aggressive buffing produces: gel coat cut away entirely in the high spots, with the fiber pattern of the laminate showing through as a dull grey ghost. There is nothing left to polish there, and the only honest options are rebuilding the surface or painting over it.

Cutting a dead surface back versus rebuilding what is gone

The first step is measurement, not sanding. We take a read on remaining gel coat thickness in several places on the panel, because that number decides everything after it. Gel coat on an RV sidewall is thin to start with, commonly in the twelve to twenty thousandths range, and once it is down past a few thousandths there is no cutting schedule that ends well.

Where there is material to work with, the schedule is progressive wet sanding to remove the degraded layer and the crazing with it, then compound, then polish. Each grit has to fully remove the scratch pattern of the one before it, and the common failure is skipping a step to save an hour, which leaves a haze that comes back within weeks as the polish oils wash out.

Where the gel coat is worn through or the crazing is deeper than the remaining thickness, the surface gets rebuilt instead. That means grinding the affected area back, spraying new tinted gel coat over it, then cutting and polishing the new material to the surrounding panel. Tinted gel coat matched to a sample runs 3 to 10 business days, which is why we take the sample at teardown rather than at the end.

This is a boundary worth stating plainly, because two pages on this site sound similar and are not. If your laminate is sound and all you want is gloss back on healthy gel coat, that is a finish operation and it lives at /rv-paint-shop/gel-coat-restoration. Nothing on this page is required for it.

This page is for surfaces where the fiberglass itself needs work before any finish will hold: crazing that has to be ground out, gel coat worn through to the mat, porous laminate that soaks water rather than shedding it, print through from an old repair that has to be blocked flat, and blistering that has to be opened and rebuilt. That is composite work on the panel, and it is the stage that determines whether the finish above it lasts two years or ten.

Beyond both of those sits paint. When the substrate work here is done and the surface will not come back to an acceptable gloss in gel coat, the coach is a candidate for a full refinish at /rv-paint-shop/full-vehicle-paint, and the substrate prep on this page is what makes that paint hold. Owners who paint a crazed panel without doing it get the crack network back through the new finish, usually within eighteen months.

What a restored fiberglass surface will not hide

Surface work is honest about its limits or it is a waste of your money. A restored panel will not hide delamination. If there is a void behind the skin, the wall will still read wavy in raking light after the surface is perfect, and thermal cycling will move that wave through the new finish. We check for voids with a tap test before quoting surface work, and where we find one we quote the bond repair first.

It will not hide a soft substrate either. Water in the luan behind a panel will migrate to the surface and blister a new gel coat from underneath, so moisture gets read before the sander comes out. It will not hide a structural crack. And it will not hide print through if the underlying cause has not been addressed, because print through is the laminate reporting a stiffness discontinuity beneath it.

It also will not make a thirty year old coach look new, and any shop telling you otherwise is selling something. What it does is recover a real amount of gloss and depth on a panel that had none, stop the substrate from degrading further, and give a finish something sound to sit on. That is worth doing on the right coach and it is worth skipping on the wrong one.

Hours, abrasives and the cost of skipping a stage

The band on this page runs from single panel surface work at the low end to full coach substrate restoration with re gelled sections at the top. Labor is $210 per hour across six to forty five hours, and the materials line is abrasives, compound, gel coat and sealer rather than parts.

The largest cost driver is coach length multiplied by how far gone the surface is. A thirty foot travel trailer with even light oxidation is a different job from a forty five foot coach with three worn through panels and crazing on the sunny side. The second driver is how many previous repairs are in the panels, because every one of them has to be blocked flat before anything goes over it.

One note on insurance: this line is generally not a claim item, because oxidation, chalk and age related crazing are wear rather than a sudden loss. Where surface restoration is part of putting a panel back after a covered impact, it belongs on the claim as part of that repair and we write it there rather than here.

Can crazing in RV fiberglass be sanded out?

Only if there is enough gel coat left to lose. Crazing is a crack network, not a stain, so abrasives remove material until the cracks are gone rather than closing them. We measure remaining thickness first. Where the crazing runs deeper than the material left, the area gets ground back and sprayed with new tinted gel coat instead, which is a longer job but the only one that holds.

How is this different from the gel coat restoration page?

My coach chalks on my hand. Is that repairable or is it paint time?

Depends on remaining thickness. Chalk means the surface resin has degraded and released pigment, which is normal on an older gel coat and often recoverable with a wet sanding and compounding schedule. Where the chalk sits over gel coat already cut thin by previous buffing, there is nothing left to work with, and rebuilding the surface or painting it are the two honest answers.

Why did my last repair start showing through the paint?

Print through, and it is almost always a substrate issue rather than a paint issue. A repair that is stiffer or thicker than the panel around it moves differently with temperature, and that difference telegraphs to the surface. The fix is at this stage: block the repair flat, feather the stiffness transition, and seal the area before any finish goes on. Repainting without it reproduces the same outcome.

Will surface restoration hide the wave in my sidewall?

No, and it is important to know that before spending on it. A wave in raking light is a bond failure behind the skin, and a perfect surface over a void still reads wavy the first time the sun hits it at an angle. We tap test before quoting surface work. Where a void turns up, the delamination repair comes first and this work follows it.

How long does fiberglass surface restoration take?

One to three weeks for most coaches. Single panel work is a few days. A full coach with several worn through sections runs the longer end, because tinted gel coat is 3 to 10 business days out once a sample is matched, and each sprayed area has to cure before it can be cut and polished to the panels around it.
