The hinge is usually the last part to actually fail
A baggage door that catches partway up gets called a hinge problem within ten seconds of the first attempt. A continuous hinge is cheap and simple, so that reading feels safe. It is wrong more often than it is right. The hinge is a long shear joint running the full width of the door and it is one of the least stressed items in the assembly.
What binding reports is that the door and the opening have stopped describing the same arc. The door swings a fixed path set by the hinge line. If the sidewall around the opening has flexed, or the skin has bowed, or a strut pushes at a slightly different angle than it did three years ago, the two interfere at one point in that path and the door stops there.
That distinction decides the price. Rehanging a door on a sound opening is an hour or two. Rehanging one on an opening that moved simply relocates the bind, and the owner pays twice for the same afternoon.
Gap taper, witness polish and a strut that suddenly wins
Start with the reveal, the gap between the closed door and the frame. From the factory it is close to even all the way around. Measure it at four points with a feeler gauge or a folded card. A taper of an eighth to a quarter inch across a door is a moved opening, and it is the most useful number you can write down before calling anybody.
Then look for witness polish. Bright rubbed spots on paint at a corner of the door or frame mean the two are touching where they should not. On the seal, a flattened band along one edge with an untouched bulb diagonally opposite is a door closing on a wedge rather than square.
Struts are the third tell and they are usually misread. Struts on a binding door have rarely gone weak; they are losing an argument with friction. Fourth, look at what someone already fixed: a keeper filed oval, a latch that only catches when the door is lifted, a shim behind a rotary latch.
Six checks that separate a door job from a sidewall job
One. Measure the reveal at four points around the closed door and write the numbers and the date on a photograph.
Two. Open the door slowly and mark the exact point it binds. Do it three times cold, then once after the coach has sat facing the sun for three hours. A bind that moves with temperature is thermal, and it tells you the frame and the skin are fighting each other.
Three. Sight down the hinge line from one end. A wave in a hinge that should be dead straight means the leaf has lifted. Check the fastener heads while you are there: a bright ring or dark halo around a rivet is a fastener that has been working.
Four. With the door supported by hand or a prop, release one strut at its ball stud and swing the door manually. If it swings clean, the bind is strut geometry or a strut mount.
Five. Lay a straightedge diagonally across the door skin. A bowed skin is delamination and the door itself is the problem.
Six. Press the compartment floor and inner wall for softness and look along the top inside edge for staining. Water sags a basement floor, and a sagging floor pulls the opening out of square from below.
Why does a working coach lose hinges faster than a weekend one?
Cycle count. A coach running local legs out of the San Gabriel Valley racks up cycles a private owner never sees, and a crew opening the same two compartments a dozen times a day puts a year of weekend use through the hinge in a fortnight. Each cycle drags dry season grit through a hinge barrel with no bushing and no grease path. The pin wears an oval, the leaf lifts a fraction, and the arc changes.
Thermal cycling does the second half. A compartment door is a shallow dark cavity facing the sun, and the skin, an aluminum extrusion frame, a steel or aluminum hinge and a fiberglass sidewall all expand at different rates. A coach stored outdoors in Los Angeles County runs that cycle five months a year, and a door that binds only on a hot afternoon facing west is the earliest version of this failure.
Then the road and the lot. Jointed concrete on SR-60 through the Puente Hills feeds torsion into the least stiff part of a long sidewall, which is the run of basement openings. A coach levelled on jacks over a cross slope carries a small twist rather than sitting in a plane, and that twist shows first at the largest opening.
From a $200 rehang to a sidewall that has to come apart
Caught at the taper, this is small. Hinge replacement, correct fasteners and sealant, struts to the right force rating, latch and keeper alignment, new seal and a squared rehang. Compartment and baggage door repair runs $200 to $1,800 across 1 to 10 hours, and clean alignment sits at the bottom of that band. Light cosmetic work turns around in 2 to 5 business days.
Caught after the door has been forced, parts arrive. A bowed or delaminated skin puts you in delamination repair at $1,500 to $20,000 plus across 10 to 100 plus hours where the same construction runs into the surrounding wall. Corroded extrusions and fastener holes that opened up fall under rust and corrosion repair at $400 to $3,500. A replacement door arriving in primer needs spot repair and blend matching at $500 to $5,000 to sit against a decade of Southern California sun.
Caught after water got in, it stops being a door job. Soft spot and water damage repair runs $750 to $18,000 plus across 5 to 80 plus hours, and aluminum skin and sidewall replacement runs $2,500 to $25,000 plus where the opening has to be rebuilt. A collision teardown estimate is 1 hour at $210, credited against an authorized repair.
Doors are built to an opening, and openings are not standard
There is no universal catalogue for compartment doors. They are built against a coach manufacturer, model year, floorplan and an actual opening dimension, and radius corner doors carry a specific corner radius in the extrusion. A quarter inch of radius difference produces a door that closes and never seals, which is the most common wrong part we see arrive.
Components move at very different speeds. Continuous hinge stock in the right leaf width and pin diameter is cut to length and is usually days. Rotary latches, T handles, keepers and seal extrusion run days to two weeks. Gas struts are specified by extended length, stroke and force in Newtons stamped on the strut body, and force matters: a strut over spec binds a door that a correct strut swings cleanly, so read the stamp rather than guessing by feel.
The long pole is a complete door at three to eight weeks built to the opening, arriving in primer or a stock gelcoat and needing finishing afterward. Discontinued sizes get fabricated here instead, which is often faster than waiting. Special order parts carry a 100 percent deposit at order and it is not refundable, and parts of $100 or less carry 100 percent markup while parts over $100 carry 35 percent.
Wear, impact and the water that follows a bent door
Hinge wear, grit, cycles and a frame that relaxed over six seasons are maintenance. A policy is not built to respond to any of it, and filing on a binding door usually produces a decision that reads correctly against the language.
Impact is different and it happens constantly here. A door struck in a lot, caught by a gate post, or left unlatched and opened at speed so it folded back over the sidewall. That last one is the expensive version, because it takes the hinge, the door, a run of skin and sometimes the opening with it. Those are covered causes with a date and a witness mark.
The case that gets mishandled is water. If a covered impact opened the seal and rain then reached the compartment floor over the following weeks, the floor is generally consequential damage from the same event, but it has to sit in the original scope rather than arrive later as a supplement. Have moisture readings taken with the meter and the location both in frame.
Measure the reveal at four points this week
Take twenty minutes with a phone and a folded card. Do the reveal measurements on every compartment door, not just the one that binds, because a taper on a second door is what tells you the sidewall moved rather than the door. Mark the bind point. Sight the hinge lines.
Then stop forcing it. Every shove through a bind loads a hinge leaf that has already lifted and works fasteners in an extrusion that is already tired, and the distance between a $200 alignment and a sidewall repair is often a few dozen more attempts. If the door will not latch, secure it for travel and leave it alone.
