The code names the symptom, not the part
An AquaHot or comparable hydronic system announces a burner problem with a lockout and an indicator, and the indicator says something like no flame or burner fault. Owners read that as a verdict on the burner. It is not. It is a statement that the control did not see proof of flame inside the window it was willing to wait, and there are at least six reasons for that which have nothing wrong with the burner at all.
This matters because of what happens next. An owner who believes the burner is dead starts pricing burner assemblies, and a burner head is one of the most expensive parts in the bay. The actual cause is more often a house battery that sagged during crank, a photocell coated in soot, an air intake full of storage lot dust, or a low chassis tank.
The productive way to think about a hydronic lockout is as a chain: control power, fuel delivery, ignition, flame proving, and heat transfer into the boiler loop. The fault message tells you the chain broke. It does not tell you which link, and the difference between links is the difference between an hour of labor and a four figure part.
What a phantom burner fault looks like from the driver seat
The tell that separates a real burner failure from a phantom one is repeatability. A genuinely failed burner fails the same way every time, immediately, cold or warm. A phantom fault is conditional, and the conditions are the diagnosis.
Look for these patterns. It locks out only when the coach is on battery and not on shore power, which points at voltage. It locks out only on the first call of the day and then runs fine, which points at a nozzle wet with unburned fuel from the last short cycle. It locks out only on a slope or only when the chassis tank is below a quarter, which points at the pickup, since the AquaHot draw tube is deliberately set above the bottom of the tank so it cannot run the chassis dry. It locks out only after the unit has been running domestic hot water for twenty minutes, which points at overheat or a circulation problem rather than ignition.
Owners also report unburned fuel smell in the bay and a puff of dark smoke on the attempts that do succeed. That pairing is close to diagnostic. It means the burner is lighting late, so ignition or flame proving is marginal and soot is building on the parts that must stay clean for the next start.
Short cycling in a mild climate: the wear pattern that belongs to Southern California coaches
Here is the mechanism most owners have never had explained. A hydronic system is a small oil fired boiler. It is designed for long, steady burns that bring the combustion chamber up to temperature and keep it there, which is how the burn stays clean.
A coach based in the San Gabriel Valley almost never uses it that way. Space heat runs a handful of nights a year. What the burner actually does, three hundred days out of the year, is fire for four to eight minutes to reheat domestic hot water and then shut down. That is a short cycle, and a short cycle never reaches the temperature where combustion is complete. Every one of them leaves a small deposit on the nozzle face, the electrode tips and the photocell lens.
Run local legs out of the San Gabriel Valley rather than long trips, and you multiply the short cycles without ever giving the unit a long burn to clean itself up. Two or three years of that and the flame proving circuit is looking through a smoked lens at a flame that is already lighting late. Then add the dust. A coach stored outdoors in Los Angeles County pulls fine grit through the combustion air intake every time the burner runs, and that grit ends up in the same places.
A second slow clock runs alongside it. The boiler loop holds a glycol coolant that degrades, goes acidic and loses its corrosion inhibitors, and in a mild climate nobody thinks about it because nobody fears freezing. Fluid eight years in is the next problem behind this one.
Where owner diagnosis stops and certification begins
There are exactly four things an owner should do before calling, and they are all measurements or observations, not adjustments.
Check house battery voltage at rest and while the burner attempts to start. A sag toward or below the low voltage cutout during the attempt explains the fault by itself. Confirm the chassis fuel level is above a quarter tank. Look at the combustion air intake screen and the bay for soot streaking, and photograph what you see. Note the exact conditions under which it locks out, using the patterns above, and write them down.
That is the line. Do not open the burner housing, pull the nozzle, adjust fuel pressure, jumper a lockout, or defeat any safety switch. Do not touch the boiler loop while it is hot. And if your hydronic unit is one of the LP fired variants rather than a diesel fired one, or if the diagnosis reaches the LP supply side at all, stop completely. LP gas work on this site is certification gated and is performed only by the certified technician. That covers the regulator, every fitting, every line, the leak test and any burner work on an LP fired appliance. It is not a matter of preference. An unqualified LP repair in an enclosed coach is the failure mode that hurts people.
Nozzle and photocell, or control board and harness
The inexpensive outcome is a burner service. The nozzle is replaced rather than cleaned, because a cleaned nozzle never atomizes the same way again. Electrodes are set to spec, the photocell is cleaned or replaced, the combustion air path is cleared, fuel pump pressure is measured against spec, the fuel filter is changed, and the unit is run through several full cycles while the flame is verified. That sits at the low end of the AquaHot and hydronic heat service band, $750 to $8,500 across three to thirty five hours.
The expensive outcome is a control board, a burner motor, a fuel pump, or a harness with corroded grounds. Voltage faults sometimes turn out to be a 12 volt supply problem outside the unit entirely, which is 12 volt electrical repair at $285 to $5,000 plus, or wiring and fuse panel repair at $400 to $5,500. On LP fired units, gas side work falls under LP gas system service, $285 to $2,500 across one to ten hours, and an LP safety inspection runs $285 to $700 across one to three hours. LP and chemicals carry a $45 flat hazmat line.
Diagnosis comes first and it is priced honestly: an in depth diagnostic is one hour at $285, credited against an authorized repair. That hour beats any part bought on a guess.
One parts channel, and what that does to a shop date
Hydronic heat is not a commodity appliance category. AquaHot components come through a single manufacturer channel with a limited dealer network, and there is no generic equivalent for a burner head, a control board or a boiler tank. That has two consequences for your calendar.
First, consumables are easy. Nozzles, electrodes, photocells, filters and gaskets are generally available inside a week, which is why a burner service is a predictable three business days to two weeks of systems turnaround. Second, assemblies are not. A control board or burner assembly for an older model commonly runs two to six weeks, and a superseded part number on a discontinued unit can run longer or arrive as a kit that changes the mounting.

Why this is a maintenance invoice and not a claim
Soot, a degraded photocell, a tired fuel pump and acidic loop fluid are all wear and accumulated deposit. Carriers exclude wear, correctly, and a hydronic lockout claim gets denied on the policy language. Nobody should waste a month finding that out.
The situations that do become claims are collision and sudden event damage. A bay door struck in a parking lot that drove debris into the unit, a rear impact that damaged the exhaust or the mounting, water intrusion after a covered roof event that reached the control board. Those are covered, and the documentation that gets them approved is the usual set: dated photographs, the mechanism of damage, and the hydronic scope written into the original estimate rather than added later as a supplement.
Bring it in with the fault still on the display
Do not clear the code. A lockout that has been reset four times has erased the most useful evidence you had. Photograph the indicator, photograph the bay, and write down the exact conditions of the last three failures including whether the coach was on shore power and how much fuel was in the chassis tank.
Then plan on the coach being here.
