What the transfer switch does and how it dies

An automatic transfer switch is a pair of contactors and a small control board. It watches for generator output, waits a set interval, then mechanically switches the coach from shore to generator and back. It is a simple device carrying the entire electrical load of the coach through moving contacts.

Contacts pit and carbon up over hundreds of transfers. Pitted contacts have resistance, resistance makes heat, heat accelerates the pitting, and the failure runs away with itself. The end state is a switch that either will not close on one source or closes with enough voltage drop that heavy loads misbehave.

The other failure is the control board, usually from heat or from a surge event. A board fault produces chatter, an endless transfer delay, or a switch that simply never recognizes the generator. Both symptoms send owners after the generator, which is running perfectly.

The inlet and cord end deserve equal attention

A 50 amp shore cord end lives a hard life. It gets dragged, stepped on, and plugged into pedestals with worn receptacles that no longer grip. Once a pin spreads or a receptacle loses tension, the connection arcs under load and both halves of the connection degrade.

That is why a hot cord end is a repair rather than an observation. Heat means resistance and resistance at 50 amps escalates. When we see a melted or discolored plug we inspect the coach inlet as well, because fitting a good cord into a damaged inlet reproduces the fault within weeks.

Surge protection belongs in this conversation. A quality unit at the inlet reports open ground, reverse polarity and low voltage before the coach's electronics find out the hard way, and it disconnects on a surge. Given what an inverter charger and a residential refrigerator cost, it is the cheapest protective hardware on the coach.

My generator runs but the RV has no power. What is wrong?

Most often the automatic transfer switch. It has to mechanically switch the whole coach load from shore to generator, and its contacts pit and carbon up over hundreds of transfers until one source will not pass. The test is voltage at the generator terminals versus voltage at the switch output. Good at the generator and dead at the switch output means the generator is healthy.
