Roof Work
Hail Damage Roof Repair: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights
Hail damage roof repair documents and repairs impact dimpling across an RV roof after a storm. The work begins with a dimple map: every panel gridded, counted, graded and photographed so the claim reflects the actual damage. Repair then follows the map, from localized membrane reinforcement to full panel and membrane replacement.
What brings this in
- Round dimples that appear only when a light is raked across the roof at a low angle
- Bruised or spider cracked gel coat at the center of each impact
- Punctured membrane over a rafter bay where the deck offered no backing
- An air conditioner shroud cracked in a scattered pattern rather than at one point
- Vent lids shattered while the membrane around them looks untouched
- A creased drip rail or awning rail along one side of the coach only
- A leak that began weeks after the storm rather than during it
- Roof mounted solar glass fractured with the frame still square

Why the dimple map is the whole job
On a hail file the repair itself is straightforward and the documentation is where the money is won or lost. A carrier pays what the file supports. If the file says the roof is dimpled, an adjuster can reasonably write a small number and defend it. If the file shows forty two impacts on the forward panel and thirty on the rear with locations, diameters and photographs, the number reflects the vehicle.
We divide the roof into panels and grid squares before anything is touched, then count and mark every impact with a paint marker keyed to a diagram. That diagram goes into the file alongside a photograph of each grid square, shot with the light raked so the impacts register on camera rather than only to the eye standing over them.
It is slow work, and it is why the collision teardown estimate is the tier on this page rather than the systems estimate. Mapping an average towable roof is about an hour before any repair decision gets made, billed at 1 hour at $210 and credited against an authorized repair.
Reading impact damage under raking light
Hail on an RV roof is far harder to see than hail on a car. There is no reflective painted panel to distort, the membrane is matte, and the substrate absorbs energy differently over a rafter than it does over an open bay. Straight overhead light hides nearly all of it.
We use a low angle light source moved across the surface, which throws a shadow off the rim of every dimple. Impacts that are invisible from three feet away in full sun stand out immediately. This is the single most common reason an owner arrives with a denial and leaves with a supported supplement.
The other half is severity rather than count. A dimple that only deformed the decking is a different repair from one that fractured the membrane or the gel coat, and different again from one that punctured through. We grade every impact so the repair method follows the actual damage instead of applying one method across a whole roof.
How a hail claim is documented so it survives review
Three things make a storm file hold up. Dated weather data for the location where the vehicle actually sat, a complete impact map, and photographs that establish scale. We put a reference object in frame so an impact diameter is verifiable rather than asserted.
Consequential damage is where these files usually lose money. If hail fractured a seam and water entered the decking over the following weeks, the decking is generally within scope, but only when it is written into the original estimate rather than appearing later as an unexplained supplement.
We bill direct with every major carrier and we write the file to be read by someone who was never in the building. That includes the moisture readings, because on a roof the damage that drives cost sits under a surface an adjuster cannot evaluate from a ladder in a parking lot.
Repair scopes, from patch to panel
Light dimpling with an intact membrane and dry decking is often a documentation and reinforcement job, with localized work only at the points that actually fractured. That sits at the bottom of the band on this page and it is a legitimate outcome.
Moderate damage means membrane replacement across the affected spans, new flashing at every penetration in the area, and replacement of shattered vent lids, air conditioner shrouds and skylight domes. Those components are almost always damaged in a hail event and they are the items most frequently missed on a first estimate.
Severe damage means the roof comes off. Punctured membrane over multiple bays, crushed decking and deformed rafters push the job into full replacement territory, and on a large coach the total can exceed the top of this band. That is why the band is written open ended rather than capped at a comfortable number.
- Impact map and severity grading on every file
- Localized reinforcement at fractured impact points
- Span membrane replacement with new penetration flashing
- Vent lid, air conditioner shroud and skylight dome replacement
- Decking and rafter replacement where the impact crushed structure
- Full membrane replacement on severe files
The delayed leak that shows up two months later
The most expensive hail outcome is the one where nothing leaked. An owner checks after the storm, sees no water inside, and never files. The membrane has micro fractures at forty impact points, and the first real rain two months later finds every one of them at the same time.
By then the storm date is contested, the reporting window may be tight, and the decking is already involved. What would have been a documented membrane job has become a decking job with an argument attached to it, and the argument is the part that costs the owner money.
If a storm passed over wherever your coach was parked, the roof gets looked at whether or not anything is dripping inside. That appointment is priced and credited against an authorized repair, and it happens here, because raking light and a walkboard are not things that travel to a driveway.
Scope
What this line item does not include
- We do not write a storm file without the vehicle in the building. There is no on-site estimate for hail, because dimple counts need raking light and a walkboard.
- Paintless dent repair is not offered on an RV roof. Roof panels are bonded to a substrate and there is no backside access to push from.
- Hail damage to sidewalls, caps and awnings is documented in the same file but repaired under body and awning line items.
Being explicit about the boundary is faster than discovering it at pickup. If the work you need sits outside this line item we will say so at intake and point you at the right one.
Questions
Hail Damage Roof Repair questions
Will insurance cover hail damage to my RV roof?
Usually yes. Hail is a sudden event, which is exactly what a comprehensive policy is written for, and it is the clearest covered cause we see on roofs. What decides the amount is documentation: a graded impact map, dated weather data for where the coach sat, and photographs with scale in frame.
How do you prove hail damage that I cannot see?
With raking light. A low angle source moved across the roof throws a shadow off the rim of each dimple, so impacts invisible in overhead sun become obvious and photographable. We grid the roof, count and grade every impact, and put the diagram in the file with a photograph of each square.
The roof was hailed on but nothing is leaking. Does it still need work?
It needs evaluation, and usually sooner than owners expect. Hail leaves micro fractures that hold out light rain and open under the first sustained one, often two months later when the storm date has become arguable. Documenting now is the cheap version of this problem.
Can an RV be declared a total loss from roof hail damage?
Yes, on older or lower value units. Once impact damage means full membrane replacement, decking work, and replacement of every rooftop component, the estimate can pass the vehicle's actual cash value. We write the scope accurately either way, because an accurate scope is what a fair settlement is built on.
What happens if my first hail estimate came in too low?
That is common and it is workable. First estimates are typically written from a ladder in whatever light was available, so impacts get missed and rooftop components get overlooked. We remap the roof properly and submit a supplement with the graded count and photographs behind it.
How long does hail repair take on a fifth wheel?
Three to eight weeks for anything past light dimpling. Membrane lead time runs 10 to 25 business days and stretches further after a regional storm, when every shop in the area is ordering the same material in the same week.
