Why the draw number is the real argument

A coach interior lit with the original incandescent and halogen fixtures can pull 15 to 25 amps at 12 volts with the lights a family actually uses turned on. The same rooms lit with quality LED pull 2 to 4 amps. On a coach with two group 27 batteries, that is the difference between running lights for two hours after sunset and running them all evening without touching the generator.

It also changes heat. Halogen pucks under a cabinet run hot enough to discolor the cabinet face above them over a few seasons, and in a small space in summer they measurably add to what the air conditioner has to remove.

The upgrade is genuinely one of the highest value per dollar changes available on an older coach, and it is the one most often done badly, because the cheap version is dropping bulbs into factory fixtures and hoping.

Why a bulb swap flickers and a proper conversion does not

Factory RV fixtures were designed around a resistive load. LED replacements are electronic loads with a driver, and they interact with the coach in ways a filament never did. Two problems show up constantly.

The first is voltage. A coach on charge sits well above 12 volts, sometimes over 14, and inexpensive LED bulbs without proper regulation flicker, buzz or fail early at that voltage. The second is dimming. A rheostat style dimmer built for an incandescent load does not dim an LED driver, it makes it strobe. Correcting that means a dimmer designed for constant voltage LED, not a different bulb.

A proper conversion replaces the fixture rather than the bulb where it makes sense, uses regulated fixtures rated across the real voltage range the coach sees, and matches the dimming hardware to the load. It also picks a colour temperature deliberately: 2700 to 3000 Kelvin in living areas, closer to 4000 in the galley and bath where you actually need to see what you are doing.

Where lighting stops being a remodel and becomes a systems repair

This is a boundary worth being clear about, because it changes who does the work and how it is priced. Adding fixtures, changing fixtures, adding switched circuits from an existing supply and installing dimming is remodel work and sits on this page.

A circuit that has gone dead, a fuse panel leg that will not hold, a parasitic draw pulling the batteries down with everything off, or a converter that is not holding voltage is a failed system. That is diagnosed at the diagnostic rate under 12 volt electrical repair, and it gets fixed before we add load to it.

We check the panel and the existing circuit before quoting an upgrade for exactly that reason. Adding six new fixtures to a circuit that is already marginal produces a callback that looks like a lighting problem and is not.

How much power does an LED conversion actually save?

A typical coach interior pulls 15 to 25 amps at 12 volts on original incandescent and halogen fixtures and 2 to 4 amps on quality LED for the same rooms. On two group 27 batteries that is the difference between a couple of hours after sunset and a full evening without starting the generator. It also removes heat the air conditioner would otherwise have to handle.

Why do my new LED bulbs flicker or buzz?

Two usual causes. Either the bulbs are unregulated and the coach sits above 14 volts on charge, which they were never designed for, or they are on an old rheostat dimmer built for an incandescent load, which makes an LED driver strobe rather than dim. Regulated fixtures and a constant voltage LED dimmer fix both, and swapping bulbs again does not.

Can you add lighting where the factory put none?

Yes, and it is the change owners notice most. Under cabinet task lighting over the galley counter, toe kick lighting for moving around at night, cove lighting in a new valance, and dedicated reading lights at the bed and the sofa are all routine. Each gets its own switched circuit rather than being tapped into the nearest wire.

Is a lighting upgrade worth doing on its own or only during a remodel?

On its own it is one of the best value changes available, and it is a short job at one to ten hours. During a remodel it is cheaper still, because the panels and cabinets that have to come off for wiring access are already off. If a remodel is on your horizon within a year, waiting saves labor.
