Furniture Replacement: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

The first measurement on any furniture job is not the wall. It is the entry door, and then the interior path from that door to where the piece has to sit. An RV entry door is typically 24 to 30 inches wide with a step well immediately inside it and a hard turn at the top, and a two seat theater assembly is frequently wider than that.

There are three ways through that and all three are legitimate depending on the coach. Order furniture that ships in sections and assembles inside, which is why most RV theater seating is sold as modular. Remove a large window or a windshield to create an opening, which is real work with real cost and real reseal implications. Or build the piece to size in the coach, which is where furniture replacement crosses into custom cabinetry.

We measure the door, the step well, the turn and the slide opening at estimate time and tell you which of the three applies before you fall in love with a specific assembly.

RV furniture is not set on the floor, it is anchored to it, and on a laminated floor that means fastening into structure or into a plate that spreads the load rather than into the deck skin alone. Furniture that works loose does so because it was fastened into a quarter inch of decking.

Slide clearance is the second thing that gets missed. A sofa that fits beautifully with the slide out can foul the slide room when it comes in, and on a coach with a flush floor slide the travel path over the top of the furniture is measured in an inch or two. We cycle the slide with the new furniture in position before final anchoring, every time.

Third is what the furniture was hiding. Factory sofas and dinettes frequently sit over an access panel, a wire chase, a water manifold or a duct. Anchoring a new piece across that access is how a future plumbing repair becomes a furniture removal job. We keep the access reachable or we relocate it deliberately and note it.

The most common swap we do is a jackknife sofa for theater seating, and the honest tradeoff is that you gain comfort and storage and you lose a sleeping surface. For a couple who never had guests that is an easy trade. For a family of five it is not, and we will say so before ordering.

The second most common is deleting a booth dinette. That reclaims the best window in most coaches and turns dead space into a work area, a pair of chairs and a table, or a large cabinet. It also removes the storage under the booth benches, which is usually where the tools and the levelling blocks lived, so the storage has to go somewhere and that is part of the design conversation.

The third is captain chairs, which on a motorhome are part of the driving position as well as the living space. Those get replaced with attention to seat base height, belt anchor location and swivel clearance against the entry step and the dash, because a chair that reclines into the entry door is a chair you cannot use parked.
