Collision

Full Collision Restoration: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Full collision restoration rebuilds a coach after severe impact, rollover or multi system damage. Structure, caps, sidewalls, roof, interior, electrical and driver assistance systems are all in scope at once. It is the largest job this facility performs and it is scoped from a complete teardown, not an estimate.

What brings this in

  • Damage across three or more major assemblies from a single event
  • Roof structure crushed or displaced, with sidewall separation along the upper run
  • Both sidewalls affected, indicating the body racked rather than dented
  • Interior wall panels split and cabinetry torn loose from wall backing
  • Slide rooms that cannot be operated because their openings have moved
  • Chassis harness damage with multiple systems inoperative on the same side
  • Water intrusion already beginning at opened envelope seams
  • A carrier initial estimate that approaches or exceeds actual cash value
  • Glass out at more than one opening, with frame distortion at the openings

When a restoration is the right answer instead of a total loss

Most severely damaged coaches should be totaled and we will say so. The cases where restoration wins are specific: a high value coach with a sound drivetrain, a recent model with available structural parts, a unit with a custom interior or conversion that cannot be replaced at market, or a fleet or specialty vehicle where the upfit is worth more than the shell.

The arithmetic is actual cash value against restoration cost plus the risk of discovery. On a coach in this band, discovery risk is real, because a teardown that deep always finds something. We build that into the scope rather than pretending it away, which is why the band on this page is wide and open ended.

The owners who regret a restoration are almost always the ones who authorized it off a partial teardown. We will not start one without a complete teardown, a full measurement baseline and a written parts availability check on every long lead assembly.

How the job is sequenced across months

Restoration runs in phases, and each phase gates the next. Phase one is complete teardown and measurement: interior out, roof components off, caps off, glass out, harness mapped and labeled. Nothing is quoted until this is done and photographed.

Phase two is structure. The coach is anchored, pulled and sectioned back to specification, and it does not leave the bench until the printout reads inside tolerance. Every downstream fit depends on this being right, so there is no compressing it.

Phase three is envelope: sidewalls, roof structure and membrane, caps, glass openings and every sealant joint rebuilt. Phase four is systems and interior, then refinish, then driver assistance scan and recalibration, then a water test and a road verification before release.

  • Phase one, complete teardown, measurement baseline and photographic record
  • Phase two, structural pull and sectioning to printed tolerance
  • Phase three, envelope rebuild including roof, sidewall, caps, glass and seals
  • Phase four, chassis and coach systems, harness repair, interior reconstruction
  • Phase five, refinish and graphics reproduction
  • Phase six, ADAS scan and recalibration, water test, alignment and road verification

Cost, hours and how the money is staged

Labor runs 150 to 800 plus hours at the posted body and paint rate of $210 per hour, with mechanical and electrical work at $260 and diagnostic and programming at $285. Parts are frequently more than half of a restoration total, because molded caps, glass, slide assemblies and harness sections are all expensive individually and this job needs several of them.

Payment is staged against the posted policy: 50 percent deposit at authorization on any job over $2,000, an additional 25 percent parts draw when parts arrive on any job over $10,000, and the balance at pickup. Special order parts carry a 100 percent non refundable deposit at order, which on a restoration is a meaningful sum committed early by necessity.

On a carrier funded restoration the staging follows the carrier payment schedule instead, and supplements are handled as they arise. We will tell you before authorization roughly how many supplements a job of this depth typically generates, because that expectation matters more than any single line on the estimate.

Fleet, municipal and specialty restoration

A municipal command vehicle, a medical outreach coach or a race transporter is not valued like a recreational coach, and the restoration decision usually goes differently. The shell may be worth $40,000 and the upfit inside it $300,000, which changes the arithmetic completely.

On those units the sequencing changes too. The upfit is documented and protected in place wherever possible rather than removed, and the structural work is planned around keeping installed systems undisturbed. That takes more labor hours than a strip and rebuild, and it is almost always the cheaper total.

We also write these files differently, because a municipal repair usually has to be coded to a purchase order and carry line item detail an insurance estimate does not require.

Scope

What this line item does not include

  • Engine and transmission internal rebuild is outside what this facility performs.
  • We do not begin a restoration before the carrier has issued a repairable determination in writing.
  • Salvage title processing and DMV filings are the owner responsibility, not a shop service.

Being explicit about the boundary is faster than discovering it at pickup. If the work you need sits outside this line item we will say so at intake and point you at the right one.

Questions

Full Collision Restoration questions

How much does a full collision restoration cost?

The band on this page is wide and open ended because coach value and damage depth vary enormously. A recent model with three damaged assemblies and available parts sits near the bottom. A rolled diesel pusher with roof structure, both sidewalls, caps, harness and interior in scope sits at the top or past it. Only a complete teardown produces a real number, and we do not start without one.

Can a rolled over motorhome be restored?

Sometimes, and the deciding factors are roof structure availability and whether the body racked. A rollover that crushed roof framing but left the chassis rails in tolerance is a large but ordinary rebuild. A rollover that racked the body out of square and needs an unavailable cap is usually a total loss, and we will tell you that with measurement data rather than an opinion.

How long does a restoration take?

Plan on three to eight months. Labor is 150 to 800 plus hours, but molded caps run 8 to 20 weeks, printed graphics add weeks after the panels are ready, and phases gate each other so they cannot run in parallel. Anyone quoting a restoration in six weeks has not checked the parts availability.

Should I fight a total loss determination to get it restored?

Only if the numbers support it. Where the coach carries a custom interior, a specialty upfit or an option package that cannot be replaced at market value, a repairable determination is often worth pursuing and we will document the case. Where it is a stock coach at market value, restoration usually costs you more than replacement and we will say so plainly.

Do you handle the claim through the whole restoration?

Yes. We bill direct with every major carrier and manage supplements as the teardown reveals scope, which on a job this deep happens repeatedly. The file carries photographs from every phase and measurement printouts from every structural stage, which is what keeps a multi month claim moving instead of stalling at each supplement.
