Commercial and Fleet Questions From Hacienda Heights Owners

Most commercial work that reaches OCRV Center from the Hacienda Heights area starts at a City of Industry dock, where a box corner met a bumper or a roll up door came off its track. The scope here is deliberately narrow, meaning in shop body, paint, structural and equipment install only. We do not perform engine work, drivetrain repair, DOT inspection certification or emission testing. Hacienda Heights is unincorporated, so invoices often code to a Los Angeles County purchase order rather than a city one, and that changes the paperwork more than the repair. The drive is 18.4 miles, 24 to 38 minutes depending on route and hour. Below is what fleet coordinators ask before releasing a unit.

A driver clipped a dock plate at an Industry warehouse and creased the lower left box panel on our 24 foot truck. Panel repair or section replacement?

It depends on the substrate and where the crease sits. A FRP or aluminum sheet panel with a crease above the rail and no rail damage is a skin repair. If the crease runs into the bottom rail or the crossmember, the rail gets addressed first because the panel is only as straight as what it is fastened to. The estimator opens the interior liner to look. Box and cargo body repair runs $750 to $15,000, and dock strikes usually land in the lower third of that band.

I have five units needing bodywork and I cannot lose more than one truck at a time. How do you sequence that?

The fleet coordinator and the service writer build a stagger, so unit one is torn down and estimated while unit two is still working. Parts for all five get ordered against the approved estimates up front, since parts lead time is what actually creates downtime. Each unit comes in only when its parts are on the shelf. That converts five sequential unknowns into five scheduled slots. Light cosmetic work is two to five business days per unit and moderate body work is one to three weeks, so the calendar gets built from those numbers.

Our address is unincorporated Hacienda Heights and our repairs bill to a Los Angeles County purchase order. Does your invoicing handle that?

Yes, and the distinction matters. Unincorporated means county services rather than a city government, so the requisition, the PO number and the remit to fields come from a county department rather than a city finance office. The service writer puts the PO number, unit number and VIN on the estimate and carries them onto the invoice so accounts payable can match without a call back. Sales tax is 7.75 percent on parts and materials, and labor is not taxed, which county auditors usually want broken out separately.

We rebranded and need new graphics on nine vans plus the old logos gone. What is realistic on timing and cost?

Fleet graphics and vinyl wrap runs $1,500 to $9,500 per unit depending on coverage, and decal removal runs $400 to $3,000. Removal is the variable nobody budgets for, because vinyl that has baked in Southern California sun for eight years comes off in fragments and leaves adhesive and a paint shadow. Where shadow is severe, panel refinish at $210 per hour plus $55 per paint hour in supplies is the honest answer rather than wrapping over it. Units get scheduled in pairs to keep your routes covered.

The Maxon gate on our stake bed stopped holding load at the top of travel. Is that hydraulic or structural?

Both get checked, in that order. Not holding at the top usually means internal cylinder bypass or a failing check valve, so the technician isolates the circuit and watches drop rate under a known load. The mounting steel gets inspected at the same time, because a gate that has been overloaded cracks at the mount plate and that is a structural welding certification job rather than a hydraulic one. Lift gate install and repair covering Maxon, Tommy Gate and Anthony runs $1,500 to $8,500. Mechanical labor is $260 per hour.

We bought two chassis cabs and need service bodies with a crane on one. What does that install look like on your floor?

Service and utility body install runs $2,500 to $15,000 and toolbox and crane body install runs $1,500 to $10,000. The crane unit drives the structural design, because mounting ties into frame rails with proper spreader plates and the compensating structure has to be welded by a certification holder. Electrical for lights, an inverter and any beacon gets run and fused properly rather than tapped. Upfit and fabrication turnaround is two to eight weeks, and body lead time from the manufacturer is usually the long pole.

Which racking do you install in a Transit cargo van, and does it survive a plumber using it hard?

We install Adrian Steel, Ranger Design and Weather Guard, and the difference in daily use is fastening rather than the shelving itself. Racking bolted into factory body reinforcement points with proper backing holds. Racking screwed into thin wall panel tears out inside a year of Turnbull Canyon Road washboard. Bulkhead and partition work runs $400 to $2,500 and cargo shelving and racking install runs $750 to $7,500. The technician also checks that shelf depth still lets the side door swing and the load stay legal.

The interior liner in our reefer box is split and we are failing temperature holds. Skin, liner or both?

Usually both, because a split liner means the foam core behind it has taken moisture and wet foam stops insulating. The technician probes the core before quoting, since replacing liner over saturated foam buys nothing. Outer skin damage gets assessed separately. Reefer and insulated box skin and liner work runs $1,000 to $18,000, and the top of that band is a full wall with core replacement. We do the box; we do not service the refrigeration unit itself or certify temperature performance for you.

Our roll up door binds about three feet from closed and the driver forces it. What is failing there?

Most often a bent track, a broken roller, or panel hinges that have worn oval from years of being forced. Sometimes it is the counterbalance spring losing tension, which makes the door heavy and accelerates everything else. The technician runs the door by hand through full travel, measures track parallelism, and inspects each panel joint. Roll up and swing door service runs $400 to $4,500. Tell your driver to stop forcing it, because a forced door bends track and turns a roller job into a section job.

Do you do body and paint on Sprinter, ProMaster and Transit vans, or only on the box truck side?

Both. Mercedes Sprinter gas and diesel, RAM ProMaster, Ford Transit and Mercedes Metris are routine here for collision body, paint, sliding door repair and panel replacement. Body and paint labor is $210 per hour with $55 per paint hour in supplies and $5 per body hour in body supplies. High roof units fit the building without issue. What we do not do on any of them is engine work, drivetrain repair or emission testing, so those go to your chassis dealer or your mechanical vendor.

We are running Rivian EDV units on the last mile route. Can you touch those, and what changes?

Yes, for body, paint and panel work. What changes is the high voltage system, which gets isolated per the manufacturer procedure before any welding, cutting or heat goes near a battery enclosure or an orange cable run. Composite panel repair techniques differ from steel, and some EDV panels are replace only rather than repairable. We do not perform drivetrain or battery pack service on them. Lead time on EDV specific body panels is the real constraint and can run several weeks from the manufacturer channel.

After a windshield and front bumper repair on one of our Transits, does the camera and radar need recalibration?

Yes, if the vehicle has driver assist and the repair moved a sensor, a bracket, or the glass the camera looks through. ADAS calibration is a certification gated procedure done to manufacturer target specification with the vehicle level and the floor measured, and it is not something to skip because the warning lights happened to stay off. It is billed under diagnostics, scan and programming at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum. The calibration report goes onto the repair file with your unit number.

Be blunt about what your shop will not take on for our fleet so I stop sending the wrong work down the 60.

No engine work of any kind, no transmission or drivetrain repair, no DOT inspection certification, no emission testing, no telematics installation or data services, no driver training and no fleet consulting. We also do not offer mobile, roadside or on site service, so every unit is repaired in the single building at 23281 La Palma Ave in Yorba Linda. What we do is body, paint, structural, fiberglass, interior and equipment installation. Knowing the line saves you a tow you did not need to pay for.

A headache rack got torn off when a load shifted and it took cab sheet metal with it. How does that estimate get written?

As two jobs on one ticket. The rack itself is $750 to $3,500 for replacement including remounting to frame or bed structure. Cab body repair runs $750 to $12,000 depending on how far the tear went into the rear cab panel and whether the back glass opening is distorted. If mounting steel is cracked, the weld work goes to a structural welding certification holder. The estimator photographs everything and writes teardown at one hour of $210 body labor, credited against the authorized repair.

What does your shop need from me at drop off so a fleet unit does not sit waiting on paperwork?

Unit number, VIN, the purchase order number or billing authority, a named contact who can approve a supplement by phone, and the keys to every compartment including toolboxes and the lift gate control. Photographs of the incident help, wide shots included. If the unit was repaired here or elsewhere before in the same area, bring the prior invoice. Without an approval contact the unit stops the moment a supplement is written, and that is the most common cause of avoidable downtime we see.

Which route should our driver take bringing a 26 foot box truck from Hacienda Boulevard, and does the hour matter?

Default is SR-60 west to Fullerton Rd, south through Rowland Heights to Harbor Blvd, then east on La Palma Ave, 18.4 miles and 24 to 32 minutes. Between 3 and 6 pm take SR-60 east to SR-57 south through Brea then SR-91 east, 21.2 miles and 26 to 38 minutes. For an oversize or wide load, I-605 south to SR-91 east is 24.6 miles and 28 to 45 minutes with better clearance. Arrive before 4:00 pm on a weekday so the unit gets checked in the same day.
