Collision and Structural Repair Questions From Hacienda Heights Owners

What is the difference between the ladder frame under my fifth wheel and the body on frame chassis under a Class C, and why does it change the repair?

A fifth wheel rides on a welded steel ladder frame with a pin box up front and outriggers carrying the floor. A Class C is body on frame: a cutaway chassis with a house structure built on top of the rails. A Class A is normally a purpose built rail chassis. The repair differs because on a ladder frame the damage path runs through outriggers and cross members you can reach, while on a body on frame coach the house has to come apart to get to the rails.

Who is allowed to weld on the frame rails of my coach, and what certification does that take?

Frame and structural welding is certification gated. Only a technician holding structural welding certification lays a bead on a frame rail, an outrigger, a cross member or a slide room support. That is not a paperwork formality: rail steel, heat input and weld placement decide whether the coach tracks straight and whether the repair survives the next 5,000 miles of California highway. Cosmetic aluminum, fiberglass and interior work is not gated the same way. LP lines are gated by LP certification, refrigerant by EPA 608 refrigerant certification, camera systems by ADAS calibration capability.

I backed my fifth wheel into a post at a Rowland Heights storage lot and crushed the front corner. What does that repair involve?

Front corner impacts on a fifth wheel are structural more often than they look. The post typically pushes the front cap, cracks the fiberglass, deforms corner framing and shifts the front wall relative to the frame. Teardown removes the cap section, the trim, insulation and interior panel to expose framing. Then the corner is measured, pulled square, damaged framing cut out and replaced by the welder, the wall re laminated and a repaired or new cap fitted.

The rear cap on my Class A is cracked through the fiberglass. Can that be laid up or does the whole cap come off?

Depends on the crack. A gel coat surface crack or a contained fracture in a flat area can be ground out, laid up with a matching glass schedule, faired and refinished, which lands roughly in the $1,500 to $8,000 range with blend. A crack running through a mounting flange, crossing a compound curve or telegraphing framing damage behind it gets a replacement cap. Molded caps are coach specific and frequently backordered, which is the real schedule driver. The estimator maps the crack with the cap still on.

How long does a molded front cap take to show up, and what exactly am I waiting on?

You are waiting on a single supplier tool. Molded caps come from the coach builder or its molder, they are not stocked in depth, and freight is oversize. Eight to sixteen weeks is a normal current window, and some discontinued model years are backordered indefinitely, which pushes the file toward a hand laid repair and refinish path instead. Special order parts carry a 100 percent non refundable deposit at order.

My Sprinter based Class B runs lane keep and adaptive cruise. Does the camera need recalibration after you replace the front fascia?

Yes. Anything that moves or replaces the front fascia, the windshield, a sensor bracket or the ride height on a Sprinter based Class B puts the forward camera and radar out of specification. ADAS scan and recalibration runs $275 to $1,800 depending on whether the procedure is static with targets, dynamic on the road, or both, and it bills at the $285 diagnostics rate with a one hour minimum. The work is certification gated because it needs target fixtures, a level floor and the manufacturer procedure.

My Class A has a one piece windshield with a spider crack. Is that different from the two piece setup on my old coach?

Very different. A two piece Class A windshield uses two curved lites in separate gaskets, and one side can be replaced by itself, which keeps the number down. A one piece unit is a single large curved lite bonded or gasket set into the cap opening, and it is a special order item with a long lead time and real freight breakage risk. RV windshield replacement runs $2,500 to $7,500.

How do you know the frame is genuinely straight when you finish and not just close enough?

Measurement, not eyeball. Reference points on the frame are recorded before the pull, compared against factory dimensions or the undamaged side, and re measured after every pull stage. Diagonals, datum height and wheelbase symmetry all get documented. On coaches with no published dimensions, which is common, the undamaged side becomes the reference and symmetry is the test. The structural damage assessment at $285 to $1,200 produces that record for the file and the carrier. Afterward axle and suspension geometry is checked, and Dexter components loaded past yield are replaced rather than straightened.

What is the pull sequence on a coach that took a rear corner hit and moved the sidewall out of line?

Last in, first out. The metal deformed in a sequence and it comes back in the reverse of that sequence, or you tear something new. On a rear corner hit that moved the sidewall, the frame is anchored ahead of the damage, the rail is pulled back to length, the corner is brought outboard, then the sidewall is drawn back to the frame line, with measurements taken between every stage. Heat is used sparingly and only where the steel tolerates it.

Can a full sidewall be replaced on a 2014 travel trailer, or is that where I should stop spending?

It can be done. Whether it should be is the harder question. A full laminated sidewall on a 2014 travel trailer means pulling every window, the entry door, the awning rail, all exterior trim, the roof edge and often the membrane edge, then peeling and rebuilding the wall with new framing, insulation, luan and Filon. That is three to eight weeks and can run past $20,000 with paint. On a unit worth $18,000 the honest answer is stop.

I have a vintage Airstream with a creased and dented rear panel. Do you work aluminum monocoque or only fiberglass coaches?

Aluminum monocoque is in scope. A creased rear panel on a vintage unit is not filled, it is either metal finished or the panel is replaced and re riveted with the correct rivet pattern and sealant. Creases that ran through a rivet line usually mean panel replacement, because the holes have elongated and the shell has lost its stressed skin function. Panel availability varies by year, and some sections are reproduced by specialty suppliers with long lead times. Polishing and clear coat decisions get made separately.

Is my damaged coach safe to drive the 18.4 miles from Hacienda Heights, or should I pay to have it hauled?

Drive it only if it is genuinely roadworthy. That means tires and wheels undamaged, no fluid leaks, lights and brakes working, no loose panels or trim that can leave the vehicle at speed, and on a towable, an intact coupler, safety chains and working brake controller. The shop does not offer mobile, roadside or on site inspection, so nobody can clear the coach in your driveway. If any of that is in doubt, have it transported.

How do you sequence a six week structural job so my coach is not just sitting there waiting on one part?

The estimator builds the file around the longest lead item, normally an OEM cap, a Lippert framing assembly or glass. Parts are ordered at authorization, then stall time is filled with work that does not depend on them: teardown, framing repair, welding, subfloor replacement, wiring and plumbing rework, interior demolition. Paint prep is staged so the booth slot lines up with the last structural sign off, because refinish cannot start before the shell is final.

At what point are you going to tell me flat out not to repair the coach?

When the repair cost plus everything else the coach still needs exceeds what it will be worth afterward. Concretely, a bent frame plus a rotted subfloor plus delaminated sidewalls on a fifteen year old gas coach is a full collision restoration at $25,000 to $150,000 or more, and that is not defensible on a unit worth $30,000. The same call applies when a discontinued cap is unavailable and a hand laid substitute would never match.

My toy hauler got side swiped on SR-60 and the right side is scraped from the wheel well back. Is that body work or structural?

Possibly both. A scrape from the wheel well back can be gel coat and paint only, which is a light cosmetic two to five business day job, or the impact can have delaminated the panel behind the scrape and cracked framing at the wheel well. The tell is a percussion check and a moisture reading along the panel, plus whether the surface deflects under hand pressure. The minor collision band is $1,000 to $8,000. If the panel separated, delamination repair starts at $1,500 and climbs with square footage.
