Absorption cooling, and the one failure that ends the unit

An absorption refrigerator has no compressor. It uses heat, from an LP burner or a 120 volt element, to drive an ammonia and water cycle through a sealed cooling unit. There are almost no moving parts, which is why they last a long time and why the failures are unusual compared to a household appliance.

The failure that ends the unit is a cooling unit leak. Ammonia escapes, the cycle stops, and the tell is a yellow residue and a sharp smell at the rear. This is not a rechargeable system. The cooling unit is replaced as a sealed assembly, or the refrigerator is replaced, and those are the only two options.

Everything else is repairable and usually inexpensive by comparison: the control board, the thermistor, the igniter and electrode, the LP burner and orifice, the flue baffle, and the rear compartment airflow. That is why the diagnostic hour matters here. It separates a $400 repair from a $3,000 decision.

Heat, level and airflow, the three things that kill performance

An absorption unit rejects heat out the back and up a vertical chimney path. It needs a lower intake vent, a clear rear cavity and an upper exhaust. When that path is obstructed, and it very often is, the unit cools poorly in exactly the weather when you need it most. Valley summer heat exposes this immediately.

Level matters because the cycle depends on gravity moving liquid through the absorber. Parked significantly off level for hours, the unit performs poorly, and in the worst case a crystallized blockage forms. A coach parked on a slope for a long weekend is a real cause of a real complaint.

The gas side matters too, and here the certification line applies. Any work that opens the LP supply, including the burner and orifice on this appliance, is certification gated by law and cannot be performed by an uncertified technician. What it needs in exchange is continuous 120 volt power, which means an inverter and a battery bank sized for overnight operation, plus a cabinet opening that fits and a mounting scheme that survives road vibration.

So the honest framing is that a residential conversion is a power system project with a refrigerator attached. Owners already planning a lithium bank and an inverter should do both together. Owners on two flooded batteries and a single stage converter should either stay with absorption or budget for the whole thing.

Why does my RV refrigerator cool on electric but not on propane?

Because those are two separate heat sources feeding the same cooling unit. Working on 120 volt and failing on LP points at the gas side: the burner, the orifice, the igniter electrode or the gas valve. That eliminates the cooling unit entirely, which is the expensive part. The gas side work is performed by a certified LP technician because the law requires it.

Can an RV absorption refrigerator be recharged?

No. The cooling unit is a sealed ammonia and water system and it is not a serviceable, rechargeable assembly. Usually a partial loss of circulation in the cooling unit, or an airflow and heat rejection problem behind the unit. Absorption refrigerators reject heat up a chimney path and need a clear lower intake and upper exhaust. A blocked cavity, a missing flue baffle or a rodent nest behind the box produces exactly that pattern, and those are inexpensive to correct.
