Fourteen either or decisions that come up constantly on RV and commercial vehicle repairs, each stated as the two real options with the tradeoff and the recommendation we give at OCRV Center. Repair or replace, spot or panel, patch or reseal, insurance or out of pocket.
Why we publish a verdict instead of a balanced summary
A comparison that ends in "it depends on your situation" is not a comparison. It is a refusal to answer wearing the costume of one. Every entry below ends with what we would actually do, because that is the thing an owner is trying to find out, and hedging it protects the shop rather than the customer.
The verdicts are not universal law. They are what we recommend given the vehicle mix we see, the Southern California climate, and what parts availability looks like from Hacienda Heights. Where the answer genuinely flips based on a specific fact, the entry names that fact rather than gesturing at it.
How to use these against an estimate you already have
If you are holding an estimate from another shop and one of these decisions was made for you without discussion, that is worth a question. Not because the other shop is wrong, but because a decision made silently is a decision nobody checked. Most of these are judgment calls where either answer is defensible and only one is right for your coach.
The comparisons that involve insurance are the ones worth reading closely. A carrier writes toward the cheaper option by default, which is correct behavior for a carrier and not always correct for the vehicle. Knowing which option the policy actually owes you is the difference between a supplement that gets approved and one that gets argued.

Decision 1
Repair the roof or replace the membrane outright?
Option A
Repair. Rebuild the failed seams and penetrations, renew lap sealant, and bond seam tape over the joints. Runs $750 to $4,500 plus and three to eight hours of bay time on a sound deck.
Option B
Replace. Membrane off, wet decking cut back to sound material, new decking scarfed in flush, new sheet bonded across. Runs $3,500 to $18,000 plus and 20 to 80 hours.
What we recommend. The moisture map decides it, not the price. If the deck reads dry against a baseline taken on the same coach, repair the joints and stop there, because a new membrane over sound decking buys you nothing a reseal does not. If readings are elevated across more than roughly a third of the deck, or the framing under it is soft, replacement is the cheaper of the two over five years. Repairing a wet roof is how a $2,000 job becomes a $12,000 job two seasons later.

EPDM or TPO when the membrane is being replaced anyway?
Option A
EPDM. Cheaper per square foot, more forgiving to install, patches easily with Eternabond, and every RV shop in the region stocks the repair chemistry for it.
Option B
TPO. Heat weldable seams, better dirt and chalk resistance, holds white longer under the UV load the San Gabriel Valley delivers, and carries a stiffer install requirement.
What we recommend. For a coach that stays uncovered on a lot in Hacienda Heights or a storage yard along Valley Blvd, TPO earns its premium, because the UV dose here chalks EPDM faster than the manufacturer's assumption. For a coach that lives under a cover or in a barn, EPDM is the better value and easier to service anywhere you travel. Do not switch chemistries midway across a roof; the transition joint becomes the new failure point.

Vacuum bag resin injection or cut out and replace the panel?
Option A
Injection. Void mapped, drilled on a pattern, resin drawn through under vacuum, then clamped and cured. Preserves the original gelcoat and graphics. $1,500 to $8,000 for a typical sidewall area.
Option B
Panel replacement. Skin cut out, substrate replaced, new filon bonded and refinished. $8,000 to $20,000 plus once paint and graphics are counted.
What we recommend. Injection is right when the void is contiguous, away from a window or door cutout, and the substrate behind it is dry and intact. It is wrong when the luan has gone to fiber, when the void crosses a structural framing member, or when the outer skin has already print through and stress cracking. Injecting a wet panel bonds resin to compromised material and it will release again. We map before recommending, which is why the systems evaluation is priced.
Decision 4
Repair the Schwintek slide or convert it to a different mechanism?
Option A
Repair. Replace the worn vertical gear rack and motors, dress the wall track, reset the controller through its learn routine, and correct the room's squareness. $750 to $7,500.
Option B
Convert. Remove the in wall drive entirely and fit a through frame or rack and pinion system. Requires floor structure work and reframing the opening.
What we recommend. Repair, almost always. Conversion sounds appealing to an owner on a third Schwintek failure, but the in wall system fails for a reason that follows the room, not the motor: a room that is out of square or a wall that has taken on water loads one side of the drive and eats the rack. Fix the geometry and the moisture and the mechanism stops failing. Conversion is worth pricing only where the sidewall itself is being rebuilt.

Agreed value or actual cash value on the policy?
Option A
Agreed value. A figure set with the carrier at binding. On a total loss the settlement is that figure, with no depreciation argument to have.
Option B
Actual cash value. The carrier's market valuation at time of loss, less depreciation, argued from comparables.
What we recommend. Agreed value, if the coach is more than about six years old, is heavily optioned, or has had significant work done. Actual cash value depends on comparable sales, and an unincorporated address like Hacienda Heights returns thinner valuation data than a named city of similar size, so the comparables argument starts against you. On a newer stock unit from a high volume builder the difference is small and the premium may not pay for itself.

Dealer service department or an independent specialty shop?
Option A
The dealer. Holds the builder relationship, may cover recall and campaign work, and can sometimes get an assembly allocated faster inside the OEM channel.
Option B
The specialty shop. Holds collision, frame, paint and fiberglass capability the dealer service drive typically does not, and can perform structural work in house.
What we recommend. It depends entirely on which of two problems you have. Anything covered by a builder campaign or a component maker's claim belongs at the dealer, full stop. Anything with structure, paint, laminate, water damage or an insurance claim attached belongs in a shop with a frame rack and a booth, because a service drive that installs appliances is not equipped to measure a coach or pull a cap. Do not send a claim to a service drive.
Decision 7
Solid surface or laminate countertop, given cargo capacity?
Option A
Solid surface. Corian style acrylic or quartz. Seamless, repairable, refinishable, and heavy: roughly 6 to 12 pounds per square foot installed depending on thickness.
Option B
High pressure laminate over a lightweight substrate. Roughly 2 to 4 pounds per square foot, far cheaper, and not repairable once the wear layer is through.
What we recommend. Run the payload math before the aesthetics. Take the coach's cargo carrying capacity off the yellow sticker, subtract water at 8.34 pounds per gallon, LP, passengers and gear, and see what is left. On a mid range travel trailer with 1,400 pounds of capacity, a quartz galley and bath swap can consume 200 pounds of it. On a diesel pusher with 4,000 pounds it is irrelevant. Quartz on a light trailer is the wrong answer even though it looks like the better one.
Decision 8
OEM parts or aftermarket on an insurance repair?
Option A
OEM. Correct fit at the flange and the mounting pattern, correct gelcoat tint on a cap, and no fabrication time. Longer lead time and a higher parts line.
Option B
Aftermarket or recycled. Available sooner, lower parts line, and often requires additional fitting labor that partially offsets the saving.
What we recommend. On anything structural, anything with a sealing surface, and anything that carries a color match, insist on OEM and put the reason in writing on the estimate. On brackets, trim, steps and interior hardware, aftermarket is usually fine and saves real money. California requires disclosure of non OEM crash parts on the estimate, so read that section rather than skimming it. A recycled cap that needs eight hours of fitting was not a saving.

Repair the delaminated slide face or accept the cosmetic flaw?
Option A
Repair now. Address the void while the substrate is still dry and the skin is still intact. $1,500 to $6,000 depending on area.
Option B
Live with it. Monitor the boundary with a marker and a moisture meter each season, and spend the money elsewhere.
What we recommend. Living with it is a defensible choice on a slide face specifically, provided you can prove the void is dry and not growing. Mark the perimeter, photograph it, and read it with a meter every three months. If the boundary moves or a reading climbs, the moisture path is open and waiting costs you the substrate. On a sidewall below a window the calculus is different, because the void will reach the window frame and then the repair scope doubles.
Decision 10
Lithium house bank now or keep the AGM batteries?
Option A
LiFePO4. Roughly twice the usable capacity per pound, tolerant of deep cycling, and it wants a charge profile the coach may not currently produce. $1,500 to $12,000 installed.
Option B
AGM. A third the cost, drops straight into the existing converter profile, and gives up half its rated capacity to keep depth of discharge reasonable.
What we recommend. Lithium is worth it only after you have priced everything else it forces. The converter or inverter charger usually has to change, the alternator charging path often needs a DC to DC unit, the battery monitor shunt has to be correct, and a bay that never saw a heated bank may need one. Owners who buy only the batteries end up with an expensive bank that never reaches full charge. If the coach sits on shore power most of the year, AGM is the rational answer.
Decision 11
Frame straightening or accept a total loss settlement?
Option A
Repair. Measure, pull on the rack in sequence, re measure, then rebuild body and paint. $3,000 to $20,000 plus for the structural portion alone, 3 to 8 weeks.
Option B
Total loss. Take the settlement, or take it with salvage retention and rebuild on your own terms outside the claim.
What we recommend. The number that matters is the repair total against the carrier's threshold, which in California practice is generally in the 70 to 80 percent range of value depending on carrier and policy language. Ask for it in writing early. If the coach is a high option diesel pusher with an agreed value, repair usually pencils. If it is a mid line towable with actual cash value, a rear corner impact frequently does not, and pushing a repair you cannot fund to completion is the worst of the available outcomes.
Decision 12
Recoat the roof or reseal the penetrations?
Option A
Reseal. Strip old sealant to clean substrate, prime, install new butyl and lap sealant at every penetration. $750 to $2,500 typical, one day.
Option B
Recoat. Full field coating over a cleaned and primed membrane, plus the reseal work underneath it. $1,500 to $4,500 plus.
What we recommend. Reseal is the maintenance item and it is due every three to four years in this climate, not the six to eight the sealant maker assumes, because the UV dose here is higher. Recoat is the right call only when the membrane field itself has chalked to the point of losing its surface, which you can check by wiping it with a dark cloth. Recoating over failed penetration sealant just hides the leak under a new film, and we will not do it that way.
Decision 13
Full repaint or spot repair and blend?
Option A
Blend. Repair the panel, spray it, and melt the color into the adjacent panels with a measured blend. $500 to $5,000 plus, 4 to 25 hours.
Option B
Full refinish. Strip, prime, and shoot the whole coach as one unit. $5,000 to $35,000 plus, 40 to 250 hours, 4 to 10 weeks.
What we recommend. Blend, unless the existing finish has failed globally. On a coach under about eight years old with intact clear, a properly mapped blend across the adjacent panels is invisible and costs a fraction of a repaint. Once the clear has begun to die back, or the gelcoat has oxidized past what a cut and buff recovers, blending into dead finish produces a repair that looks newer than the coach around it, and the owner is unhappy for a reason no amount of extra blend time fixes.

Rebuild the failed generator or replace the unit?
Option A
Rebuild the house generator. Carburetor or fuel system service, control board, brushes, windings, mounts, exhaust. $400 to $8,500 plus depending on how deep it goes.
Option B
Replace with a new Onan or Cummins unit sized to the coach. $2,500 to $14,000 installed, including bay modification and exhaust routing where needed.
What we recommend. Run the hour meter first. Under roughly 1,500 hours with good compression, repair the house generator and expect years out of it. Past about 3,000 hours with a failing control board and a slobbering exhaust from years of light load running, you are funding a series of repairs on a worn machine. Note that this is the house generator only; chassis engine and drivetrain work is not performed at this facility and we will tell you that up front.

Do you always recommend the more expensive option?
No, and several verdicts below go the other way. Spot repair over full panel where the adjacent finish is sound. Reseal over replacement where the membrane still has thickness. Recommending the larger job every time would be easy money and would also end the referral pipeline that keeps a specialty shop alive.
What if my adjuster disagrees with one of these?
Then the disagreement is documentable, which is the useful part. We write the reason a given operation is required with photographs, measurements and the manufacturer procedure attached. An adjuster is not obligated to agree with our judgment, but they do have to respond to evidence.
Holding an estimate with one of these decided for you
Send it over. A decision made without discussion is a decision nobody checked, and checking it is a short conversation.
