Case study
Rear cap impact with hidden frame displacement on a 40 foot diesel pusher
Backed into a steel bollard at a storage yard. Visible damage was a cracked rear cap and a bent ladder. Teardown found the rear frame extension displaced 11 millimeters out of square and the generator bay floor buckled, neither of which was visible with the cap on. The carrier's initial estimate was written from the cap outward and missed all of it.
Vehicle
40 foot Class A diesel pusher, Freightliner XC raised rail chassis
Price band
$4,500 to $25,000 plus
Calendar time
3 to 8 weeks
Operations
What the job actually consisted of
- Priced collision teardown, rear cap and bumper fascia removed to expose the frame extension
- Three dimensional measurement against factory datum points, documented before any pull
- Sequenced pull on the frame rack, re measured between each stage
- Generator bay floor section cut out and a new panel scarfed in, welded by certified personnel
- OEM rear cap ordered through the builder channel, seven week lead time disclosed at authorization
- Cap bonded, faired, primed, and refinished with a mapped blend into both rear side panels
- Supplement filed with the measurement report attached, approved without a reinspection delay
Outcome
How it ended
The coach came back square, the generator slide out tray tracks correctly again, and the carrier paid the supplement because the measurement report made the hidden displacement a document rather than an argument. The owner kept a coach the carrier had initially proposed to total at 63 percent of value.

Other jobs from this floor
36 foot fifth wheel, Lippert frame, two in wall slide rooms / $750 to $7,500
Third Schwintek failure on a fifth wheel traced to room geometry, not the drive
The off door side room had eaten two vertical gear racks and a motor pair in 26 months. Two prior shops replaced the racks and reset the controller, and the failure returned within a season each time. The room was binding on one side because the floor at the front corner had taken water from a failed window reseal and dropped roughly 6 millimeters.
31 foot travel trailer, EPDM membrane over luan decking / $3,500 to $18,000 plus
Two seasons of slow intrusion on a travel trailer roof, decking and subfloor
The owner reported a ceiling stain above the dinette. Moisture mapping showed elevated readings across roughly 40 percent of the deck and a separate wet zone in the floor in front of the entry door, which was fed by a different path entirely. The visible stain was nearly two meters from the actual entry point at the refrigerator vent flange.
34 foot fifth wheel, laminated filon sidewall over block foam and luan / $1,500 to $20,000 plus
Sidewall delamination repaired by vacuum injection with original graphics preserved
A void roughly 1.5 meters by 1 meter had opened on the off door side below the awning rail. Sighting down the wall in raking light showed a flat spot and a soft bulge. The owner had been quoted a full panel replacement, which would have destroyed the factory graphics and required a full side refinish to match.
26 foot box truck, aluminum body, Maxon rail gate / $750 to $12,000
Dock strike on a 26 foot box truck with lift gate and rear frame damage
The unit was reversed into a dock bumper at an angle. The rear sill was pushed, the lower two body panels were creased, the roll up door track was bound, and the lift gate platform would not sit flat. The unit was revenue equipment for an operator out of the City of Industry distribution corridor, so downtime was the primary cost, not the repair.
