When a food truck service window leaks with no visible crack in Hacienda Heights

A service window rarely leaks through the glass. Nightly commissary washdown at 1,500 to 3,000 psi drives water past the frame flange. A reseal runs $250 to $3,500; the sidewall behind it runs to $12,000.

The glass is not where the water gets in

The first move most operators make is to buy a slider gasket. The window drips, the glass is the obvious suspect, and a gasket is cheap. It almost never solves anything, because a concession window is two separate assemblies and only one of them involves glass. There is the window unit itself, and there is the joint between that unit and the hole an upfitter cut in the side of the box.

The second joint is the one that fails. A service window opening is a large rectangular cut through a skin, a frame member and an interior liner, with a radius at each corner and a fastener every four to six inches around the perimeter. The frame is clamped or screwed against a bead of sealant. Everything about that joint is a compromise between three materials that expand at different rates.

There is a third path operators rarely check. Most concession windows have weep slots at the bottom of the track, and the track is designed to fill and drain. A previous repair that ran silicone along the sill usually seals those slots shut. From then on the track holds water permanently, and the assembly is doing the opposite of its job with no crack anywhere in it.

Rust weep at the lower corner and a swollen liner panel

Look for a rust colored tear stain running down from the lower corners of the frame, strongest on the curbside where the window is. On a steel framed box that stain is the frame member behind the skin telling you it has been wet for months. On an aluminum or fiberglass box you get a chalky white bloom instead, and it reads the same way.

Inside, put a hand on the liner directly under the sill. FRP or aluminum liner over wet substrate goes slightly convex, and the fastener heads through it sit proud where the material has swelled around them. Along the counter, check whether the sealant at the sill has a dark line under it rather than in it. Sealant that has debonded from one side looks perfect from the front and passes nothing from the back.

Two mechanical tells finish the picture. Screws along the top rail that have backed out a turn or two mean the frame has been cycling against the opening. And a track that still holds water an hour after washdown means the weep slots are blocked, which is the single most common condition we find on a truck that has been in service five years or more.

Nightly pressure washing does what rain never could

A food truck working out of Hacienda Heights or anywhere along the SR-60 corridor sees a loading pattern no recreational vehicle ever sees. It bakes outdoors all afternoon, runs a flat top and a fryer that push the interior past 110 degrees, then gets washed at a commissary at the end of the shift, every shift. Rain is not the water source. The wand is.

At 1,500 to 3,000 psi, water aimed upward at a sill is pressurized to a level gravity never produces. It goes past a seal that would shed a rainstorm indefinitely, and it goes in behind the flange rather than through it. Direct that at the same eighteen inches of sill six nights a week and a joint with any debonding at all begins moving water into the wall on a schedule.

The heat cycle sets that up. An aluminum window frame in a steel opening moves at a different rate than the steel does, and the interior heat load means the frame is working against the skin from both sides. Add the road input: SR-60 concrete slab joints and the SR-57 and SR-91 transitions rack a box body at low frequency all the way to the commissary and back. Sealant chosen for a static joint does not survive that combination.

How much does one deferred season actually cost?

Resealed early, this is a small job. The window comes out, old sealant is cut off both mating surfaces rather than covered, the opening is dried and inspected, corners are checked for corrosion, weep slots are cleared, and the unit is rebedded on the correct sealant for a moving joint. Window frame reseal and replacement runs $250 to $3,500 at 1 to 14 hours, and a reseal that reuses the window sits low in that band. Light work like that turns around in 2 to 5 business days.

Deferred, the numbers change category. Corrosion in the frame member behind the skin puts you into rust and corrosion repair at $400 to $3,500, panel replacement at $750 to $12,000 across 5 to 60 hours, and if the floor took the water, flooring repair and replacement at $750 to $9,500. Moderate body work runs 1 to 3 weeks of shop time, and anything that needs a fabricated opening runs 2 to 8.

The measurement that decides which one you are in costs one hour. A collision teardown estimate is 1 hour at $210 and an RV systems estimate is $150, both credited against an authorized repair. On a truck that earns every day it is open, the shop days you avoid are usually worth more than the repair itself.

The build sheet, the rough opening and the wall thickness

This is where a food truck differs from a coach, and it is the part operators are least prepared for. There is no VIN lookup for a service window. The chassis has a VIN, the box may have a serial plate, but the window was specified by whoever built the truck out, from a concession window catalog, and matched to a wall thickness that upfitter happened to be building at the time.

So the part is defined by four numbers rather than a name: rough opening width, rough opening height, wall thickness at the opening, and whether the frame is a clamp ring type that squeezes the wall from both sides or a flanged type that screws to the outside. Corner radius matters too. Getting those wrong produces a window that mounts and leaks worse than the one you removed.

Lead time follows directly. A stock size in a common wall thickness ships in days to two weeks. A nonstandard opening, an unusual wall thickness or a discontinued frame profile runs four to eight weeks, and if the original upfitter has closed there is no channel at all, in which case the answer is a fabricated frame and adapter under structural welding and fabrication at $750 to $20,000 plus. Special order parts carry a 100 percent deposit at order and that deposit is not refundable, which is why we measure before we order.

Which part of this does a commercial policy respond to?

Physical damage coverage generally responds to sudden and accidental damage and generally excludes wear. A seal that debonded across two years of washdown is wear by any reading, and that is a structural feature of how the coverage is written rather than a decision made about your truck. Filing on the gradual version tends to produce a denial that is correct against the policy language.

What responds is an event. Something struck the window, a load shifted into the frame, a low clearance caught the awning cover, another vehicle contacted the side. Those get funded, and the material that supports them is dated photographs, the impact pattern, and photographs taken during disassembly with fasteners and broken interfaces still in place rather than reconstructed afterward from a parts bin.

Two things sit outside a repair estimate entirely. Lost revenue during downtime is a policy question for your agent, not a line a shop can write. And a prior repair discovered at teardown, silicone where a butyl bead belonged for instance, gets documented and priced separately from the new damage, because a file that names the old work explicitly tends to get the new damage approved while a file that buries it tends not to.

Take the truck out of service for one morning

Pick a slow morning and do four things in order. Flood the track with a hose and time how long it takes to drain; anything over a couple of minutes means blocked weeps. Run a fingernail along the entire sill sealant bead looking for a dark line under it. Check every perimeter screw for a turn of backout. Then have someone wash the sill from outside at working pressure while you watch the liner from inside with a flashlight held low.

Photograph everything you find, with the date on, and keep the folder with the truck's paperwork. If the upfitter build sheet still exists, photograph that too. Those four numbers on it are worth several weeks of calendar if the window ever has to be replaced instead of resealed.
