# Flooring Repair and Replacement: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights RV flooring work replaces the finish floor and, where needed, repairs the bonded subfloor under it. The subfloor is structural on almost every coach built in the last thirty years, so the first question is never which plank you want. It is a laminated deck: a lower skin, a foam or block core, framing, and an upper layer of plywood or oriented strand board that the finish flooring bonds to. That assembly carries structural load and ties the sidewalls together at the bottom. When water reaches it, the bond between layers releases and the deck loses stiffness. That is what a soft floor is. It is not a worn covering, it is a delaminated structural panel, and covering it with new flooring accomplishes nothing except hiding the progression. So we read moisture across the floor on a grid before quoting a finish. If the deck is dry, this is a straightforward covering replacement. If it is wet, the wet area gets opened, the core and framing are repaired, and new decking is scarfed in flush before any covering goes down. That second job is priced separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for. ## What actually works underfoot in a coach Luxury vinyl plank is the default for good reason. It is dimensionally stable across the temperature swing a parked coach sees in the San Gabriel Valley, it is genuinely waterproof at the wear layer, it is 1.4 to 2 pounds per square foot so it does not eat cargo capacity, and a damaged plank can be replaced without redoing the room. Sheet vinyl, particularly a marine grade product, is the better answer in a wet bath or a galley where a seamless surface matters. Carpet still makes sense in a bedroom and in slide rooms where a hard surface would abrade the seal. Porcelain tile looks superb and is the one choice we push back on, because at 8 to 10 pounds per square foot over backer board it adds real weight and because grout lines crack on a structure that flexes unless the substrate is prepared with an uncoupling membrane. Laminate with a fiberboard core is the material we will not install in a coach. To reach the floor under a slide room the slide has to be run out and supported. To reach the floor under a dinette or a sofa the furniture comes out. To finish the flooring properly at a cabinet the toe kick comes off, and on some coaches the cabinet itself has to be unfastened and lifted. The alternative is what a cheap installer does: cut the covering around every obstruction and finish with a molding strip. That produces a floor with a hundred feet of caulked edge, every foot of which is a place water sits, and it makes any future cabinet or appliance change into a flooring job. We quote the removal honestly. On a 34 foot coach with two slides, a dinette, a sofa and a full galley, expect the removal and reinstallation of furniture to be a meaningful share of the total hours, and expect the finished result to have flooring that runs continuously under the cabinet toe kicks. ## Not included - We do not install flooring at a customer location. Adhesive needs a controlled temperature and a clean dry deck. - We do not lay new flooring over a subfloor that reads wet. The deck is repaired first, as its own line item. - Slide room floor structural repair is scoped under slide work, not under flooring. ## Questions **How much does it cost to replace the flooring in an RV?** The band on this page covers a covering replacement on a sound deck. Square footage matters less than how much has to come out to reach the floor: slides supported and run, furniture removed, toe kicks off. A short trailer with an open floorplan sits near the bottom. A long coach with two slides and a full galley sits near the top. Subfloor repair is quoted separately. **My RV floor is soft in one spot. Can you just patch it?** Sometimes, and it depends on the moisture boundary rather than on the size of the soft area. A localized wet spot with dry decking around it can be opened, dried, repaired and scarfed flush. A soft area that reads wet across several feet usually means the intrusion has been running along framing for years, and the honest scope is larger than the spot you can feel. **Can I have tile in my coach?** You can, with two conditions we will insist on. The substrate gets an uncoupling membrane so grout lines survive structural flex, and we run the weight numbers first, because porcelain over backer is 8 to 10 pounds per square foot against under 2 for vinyl plank. On a coach with limited cargo capacity that difference matters more than the look. **Does the furniture have to come out?** For a result that lasts, yes.
