# Countertop Repair and Replacement: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Countertop work covers the galley, bath and dinette surfaces: repairing a delaminated laminate edge, refinishing a solid surface, or replacing a top entirely in laminate, solid surface acrylic or stone. On a coach the deciding factor is weight, because a stone top is the single heaviest upgrade most owners consider.

## Weight is the first number, not the last

Owners arrive wanting quartz because it is what they have at home, and quartz in a coach is entirely possible. What has to be said out loud first is what it costs in capacity. Three centimeter quartz or granite runs roughly 15 to 18 pounds per square foot installed. A galley with 18 square feet of top plus a bath vanity at 6 square feet is 360 to 430 pounds of stone. The laminate you are removing is under 50 pounds for the same area.

That is a net gain of 300 to 380 pounds on a chassis that may have had 1,400 pounds of cargo capacity when it left the factory, before you loaded water, propane, tools, food, bedding and people. Add a residential refrigerator and a tile shower and the coach is over its rating with an empty pantry. OCRV Center runs those numbers before quoting the slab rather than after installing it.

The middle path most owners end up choosing once they see the arithmetic is solid surface acrylic. It is 6 to 9 pounds per square foot, roughly half of stone. It is seamless, repairable, and refinishable in place when it dulls, which stone is not. And it can be integrated with a molded sink so the sink perimeter has no sealant joint to fail. For a coach, that combination is genuinely better engineering than stone, not a compromise.

## Why laminate tops fail at the same two places

Nearly every laminate failure we see starts at the sink cutout or the cooktop cutout. Both are holes in a particleboard core, and both live under a source of water or heat. When the factory sealant at the sink rim opens, water wicks into the exposed core, the core swells, and the laminate above it lifts. Once the core has swollen the top cannot be repaired, because there is nothing flat left to bond to.

Caught early, before the core has taken water, a lifting edge is a legitimate repair: the laminate is cleaned, re bonded with contact adhesive under heat and pressure, and the edge is re trimmed. That is a short job and it holds if the sealant is renewed at the same time.

Where the core is gone, the top is replaced. On the way out we also look at the cabinet base, because a swollen core usually means water has been sitting in the cabinet below it for a long time.

## What replacement actually involves in a coach

A countertop in a house is templated off cabinets that are plumb and square. In a coach neither is true, and the walls behind the top are rarely straight either. So templating happens in the bay, off the cabinets as they are actually installed, after any cabinet work is finished. Templating off a drawing produces a top with a visible gap at the wall.

If the new top is stone, the cabinet bases usually need reinforcement. Factory RV cabinet boxes were built to carry a laminate top and a sink, not 400 pounds of slab that concentrates load at the front edge. That reinforcement is part of the honest scope and it is why a stone job is more hours than the slab price suggests.

Cutouts get a proper radius rather than a square inside corner, because a square corner is a stress riser and it is where a top cracks on a structure that flexes. On solid surface we reinforce the cutout perimeter. On stone we set the cutout position with the appliance in hand rather than off a specification sheet, because appliance dimensions drift between model years.

## Not included

- We do not template or install countertops at a customer location. Templating happens off installed cabinets in the bay.
- Sink, faucet and cooktop failures are diagnosed and repaired as systems work, not as countertop work.
- We do not install a stone top on cabinet bases that will not carry it without reinforcement.

## Questions

**Can I put quartz or granite countertops in my RV?**

Yes, with two conditions. First, the weight arithmetic has to work: three centimeter stone is 15 to 18 pounds per square foot, so a galley and bath can add 300 to 380 pounds net over the laminate coming out. Second, the cabinet bases usually need reinforcement to carry it. We run both before quoting the slab.

**What countertop material do you recommend for a coach?**

Solid surface acrylic, for most owners. It is roughly half the weight of stone, it can be seamed invisibly and integrated with a molded sink so there is no sealant joint at the rim to fail, and it can be refinished in place when it dulls. In a vehicle that flexes and where every pound is budgeted, those properties matter more than the look of stone.

**Can a lifting laminate edge be repaired?**

If the particleboard core underneath is still dry and flat, yes. The laminate is cleaned, re bonded under heat and pressure and the edge re trimmed, and the sink or cooktop sealant is renewed at the same time so it does not repeat. If the core has already swollen, there is nothing flat left to bond to and the top gets replaced.

**Why do my countertops crack at the corner of the sink cutout?**

Because the cutout has a square inside corner. A square corner concentrates stress, and a coach flexes constantly, so the crack starts there and runs. We cut cutouts with a proper radius and reinforce the perimeter, which is a small detail that decides whether a top survives ten years of road inputs or two.
