# Frame Straightening: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Frame straightening returns a deformed chassis frame to the manufacturer specification on an anchored bench, verified by control point measurement rather than by appearance. ## Three kinds of frame deformation, three different answers

Bend, twist and kink are not the same problem and they do not get the same treatment. A bend is a smooth curve in a rail with the section intact; that pulls back cleanly and holds. A twist is rotation along the length, common on towables after a hard landing or an uneven load, and it pulls back against opposed anchors.

A kink is a sharp local fold where the metal has yielded past its limit and the section has collapsed. A kink does not straighten. It gets sectioned and replaced at an approved location, because the metal at the fold has already used up its ductility and will fold again in the same place under less load than it took the first time.

The measurement session tells us which one we have, and often the answer is two of the three on the same coach. That is normal after a real impact and it is why the band on this page is open ended.

## What happens on the bench

The unit is anchored at the manufacturer specified points, not wherever a clamp fits. Then every accessible control point is read and compared against specification, which produces a printed baseline. That baseline is the document the rest of the job answers to.

Pulls are made with hydraulic rams against fixed towers, incrementally, with a measurement between each. Cold pulling is the default. Controlled heat is used sparingly and only where the material and the chassis manufacturer allow it, because heat on a high strength steel rail changes its properties permanently.

Once the frame reads inside tolerance, the correction is documented with a second printout and the frame is inspected for cracks at every point that was loaded during the pull. Cracks found at that stage are ground out and welded by a certification gated process before anything is reassembled.

## Towable frames and the Lippert reality

Most fifth wheel and travel trailer frames in the market come from Lippert, and that is genuinely useful when a frame is damaged. Sections, crossmembers, outriggers and suspension hangers are catalog items with real availability, often three to fifteen business days, which is faster than almost anything else on a damaged coach.

It also means the failure patterns are consistent and known. Cracked I beam webs at the suspension hanger, sagging rear frame extensions behind the axles, and separated welds at the pin box transition show up constantly and each has a standard correction.

Where a towable frame has both impact damage and a pre existing crack pattern at the hangers, we will show you both. The insurance claim covers the impact. The crack pattern is usually a maintenance finding, and knowing which is which before authorization keeps the invoice from becoming an argument.

## Cost, hours and what comes after the pull

Labor runs 15 to 80 plus hours at the posted body and paint rate of $210 per hour. A single plane bend on a towable frame with good access is near the bottom of the band. A motorhome with rail damage, a diamond condition and two sectioned rails is at the top of it or beyond.

The pull is rarely the whole invoice. Suspension components loaded in the same event frequently need replacement, alignment has to be reset on the rack afterward, and on chassis carrying forward radar or camera systems the sensors need scan and recalibration because their mounting geometry moved with the frame.

We quote those as separate lines rather than folding them in, so you can see what the structural work cost and what the consequences of the structural work cost. On a claim, carriers frequently adjust them differently.

## Not included

- We do not straighten frames at a customer location. The process requires anchored fixtures and a level floor.
- A cracked weld with no impact history is a fabrication and reinforcement job, not a straightening job.
- Suspension component replacement is quoted separately from the pull itself.

## Questions

**Can an RV frame really be straightened, or is it ruined?**

Straightened, in most cases. A rail that is bent or twisted with its section intact pulls back to specification on the bench and stays there, verified by control point measurement. A rail that is kinked, torn or corroded through gets sectioned and replaced instead. The classification comes from measurement and visual inspection of the section, not from how bad it looks in a photograph.

**How much does frame straightening cost?**

**How do I know if my trailer frame is bent?**

The reliable tells are dog tracking behind the tow vehicle, uneven tire wear that started after an event, a nose high or nose low stance that correct hitch setup will not fix, and slides that bind on one side only. None of those are proof. A structural damage assessment reads control points and gives you a printed answer for a defined price.

**Will the coach track straight afterward?**

It should, and we verify rather than assume. The frame is not signed off until control points read inside tolerance, and the unit then goes on the alignment rack so thrust angle and toe are set to the corrected structure rather than to the damaged one. Alignment done before the pull is wasted labor, which is why the order matters.

**Does frame damage automatically mean a total loss?**

No. It raises the repair cost enough that the carrier will run the calculation, which is a different thing. Frame work on a towable is often modest because Lippert sections are available and cheap relative to everything else. Frame work on a motorhome that also needs a molded cap is where total loss determinations usually come from, and the cap is generally the reason rather than the frame.
