# Fender and Quarter Panel Repair: Cost, Hours and Process in Hacienda Heights

Fender and quarter panel repair addresses the wheel well area and the panel surrounding it. On RVs the dominant cause is not contact. It is tire failure: a tread separation at highway speed destroys the fender skirt, the wheel well liner and often the lower sidewall in one event.

## What a tread separation actually does to a coach

When a trailer tire loses its tread at 60 miles per hour, the belt does not simply fall away. It stays partly attached and rotates, and each rotation slams a strip of steel belted rubber upward and outward at the fender, the wheel well, the underbelly and the lower sidewall. Owners often describe it as sounding like a hammer, because that is functionally what it is.

The damage pattern is therefore never just the fender. We routinely find a torn fender skirt, a destroyed wheel well liner, a punched lower sidewall behind the wheel, a torn coroplast underbelly, damaged plumbing or wiring routed in that bay, and sometimes a bent step or a wrecked slide out bottom trim on the same side.

That is why the estimate on this work is written after the coach is up in the air with the liner out. Writing it from a photograph of the fender underestimates almost every time, and an underestimate on a claim is worse than no estimate, because it becomes the number the carrier anchors to.

## The wheel opening is the highest stress point on any panel

Independent of tire failure, the radius at the top of a wheel opening is where a sidewall panel works hardest. It is a curved free edge in a panel that flexes with the frame, and stress concentrates there the way it does at a corner in any sheet material. Cracks that start there run, and filling them without addressing the edge produces a crack in the same place in a year.

On a laminated wall, the correct repair opens the crack, stabilizes the core behind it, and lets in new skin with the boundary carried past the radius so the seam is not sitting in the stress path. On aluminum, the edge is reinforced and the flange re fastened into sound substrate rather than into the same stripped holes.

We also look at what is above the fender. A cracked wheel radius on a coach with a soft floor above it is usually telling you about the floor, not the fender, and repairing only the visible crack leaves the actual problem in place.

## Cost, hours and how the claim gets written

The band on this page is 4 to 35 hours at $210 per hour plus material. The low end is a bolt on molded skirt with intact substrate behind it. The high end is a skirt, liner, lower panel section, underbelly and the plumbing repairs that came with them.

Tire failure damage is one of the more reliably covered exterior claims, because it is a discrete sudden event rather than accumulated wear. What carriers push back on is scope creep, so the file is written with the coach in the air: rubber transfer photographed, liner absence photographed, panel moisture read and recorded, and every disturbed system listed on its own line.

The RV systems estimate is $150 and it is credited against an authorized repair. On this job it buys a lift, a liner removal and a real scope, which is the difference between a supplement and an argument later.

## Not included

- We do not sell or mount tires, and we do not diagnose the tire failure itself. We repair what the failure destroyed.
- Axle, spring and suspension damage from the same event is separate mechanical scope and is written on its own line.
- We do not perform work at a customer location. A wheel well repair needs the coach on a lift or on jack stands in a bay.

## Questions

**How much damage does an RV blowout really cause?**

More than owners expect and more than the fender shows. A separating tread rotates and strikes repeatedly, so the typical scope is fender skirt, wheel well liner, a lower sidewall section, torn underbelly, and whatever plumbing or wiring runs through that bay. We scope it with the coach lifted and the liner out, because that is the only way the number holds up.

**Can a cracked fender skirt be repaired instead of replaced?**

Sometimes, and it depends on the material and where the crack sits. A molded skirt cracked at a mounting flange can often be laminated and re flanged. A skirt torn across its visible face will show a repair line under raking light even when the structure is sound, so on a coach where appearance matters we usually recommend replacement and price both.

**Why does the crack keep coming back at the top of the wheel opening?**

Because that radius is the highest stress point in the panel and a filler repair does not change the stress. The panel is a free curved edge in a wall that flexes with the frame. A durable repair carries the new material past the radius so the seam is out of the stress path, and it re fastens the flange into sound substrate rather than the original stripped holes.

**Do you check the floor and underbelly at the same time?**

Always, because the wheel bay is where road water and tread debris enter the underfloor. With the liner out we read moisture at the floor edge, check the tank straps and look at plumbing runs. Finding a soft floor edge at that point costs you a conversation. Finding it two years later costs you a floor.
