# Motorhome and Coach Repair for Hacienda Heights and the SR-60 Corridor

A Class A gas coach on a Ford F53 rail chassis behaves nothing like a diesel pusher on a Spartan K2 when it takes a hit at the same corner, because the F53 puts a steel rail under the front cap and the K2 does not. When an owner calls and describes front end damage, the first question back is what is under it, not what it looks like. That answer decides whether this is a fiberglass and paint job in the $4,500 to $12,000 range or a structural job that starts with pulling the cap and measuring the rails.

Coach construction is where the money hides. A modern laminated sidewall is a vacuum bonded sandwich: gel coated fiberglass on the outside, then block foam, then luan plywood, all bonded to a welded aluminum tube frame. It is light, it is stiff, and it has one failure mode that owners never see coming, which is adhesive release. Once the bond between the fiberglass and the luan lets go, the panel goes wavy and the wall stops carrying load the way the builder intended. That is delamination, and in this region it is driven as often by heat cycling in an uncovered storage lot as by water. The older sidewall type, aluminum sheet screwed to an aluminum stud cage, does not delaminate but dents on contact and telegraphs every stud line once it has been filled badly. Knowing which of the two is in front of you changes the repair method, the material order and the hour count before anyone picks up a tool.

Damage patterns on coaches are boringly consistent, which is useful. The front cap and the rear cap take the majority of it, because both are molded fiberglass hung on a frame with almost nothing behind them, and because a 38 foot coach has a turning radius its driver forgets. The second most common area is the entry side above and behind the step, from pedestals, curbs and posts at fuel islands. Third is a mirror height sweep down the driver side, usually from a tree limb or a wall at a storage facility, which reads as a long shallow gouge across three panels and a torn awning rail. Fourth is the roof, and roof strikes are the ones that get missed: a limb that cracks an air conditioner shroud also flexes the membrane at the flange, and the leak shows up a year later as a stain in a cabinet. Fifth is the rear cap on any coach that tows, where a jackknifed tow bar or an over tightened hitch receiver has pulled the rear frame extension out of plane.

Parts are the honest reason a coach repair takes longer than a car repair. A molded front cap is not a shelf item. It is pulled from the coach builder's mold to order, and on a coach older than about twelve years the mold may be gone, at which point the answer is a fabricated repair rather than a replacement. Gel coat coaches and full body paint coaches diverge here too: gel coat with applied decals can be restored cheaply if the decal is still in production and becomes an expensive problem the moment it is not, while a full body paint coach with a four stage pearl needs blend panels and a spray out card before a single coat goes on the vehicle. On the systems side we work the assemblies that are actually in these coaches, which means Lippert and Power Gear and HWH for slides and levelers, Kwikee for steps, Dometic and Carefree for awnings and air, Onan for generator sets, and AquaHot or Oasis for hydronic heat on the diesel units. Lead time is the number worth planning around rather than price. Common slide, step and leveling components move in three to ten business days. A molded cap runs three to eight weeks. A discontinued decal set means a reprint from photographs or a redesign, and that decision belongs to the owner rather than to us. Parts price at 100 percent markup under $100 and 35 percent above it, and a special order part carries a 100 percent deposit at order because it is not returnable once the builder pulls it.

Certification gates part of this list, and that is worth stating plainly because it is what separates a shop that can finish a coach from one that has to send it out twice. LP work on a coach requires a certified technician, refrigerant work requires EPA 608, structural welding on a chassis rail requires a certified welder and a documented procedure, and any coach with forward radar or a lane camera needs a post repair scan and recalibration before it leaves. What we do not do is mechanical driveline work: no engine rebuild, no transmission rebuild, no drivetrain repair. Our scope is collision, body, paint, fiberglass, structural, interior and onboard systems. If a coach arrives with a bent frame and a failing transmission, we fix the frame and tell you plainly that the second half belongs to a chassis dealer. - The floor is a bonded laminate deck on a welded steel or aluminum understructure, with slide room openings cut into the sidewall and the load rerouted around them.
- Slide rooms run Lippert through frame hydraulic, rack and pinion, or Schwintek in wall drives, and the drive type dictates both the failure mode and the parts channel.
- Basement compartments on a pusher are structural bays with bonded doors and gas struts, so a crushed compartment door frame is a body repair and not a trim swap.

## Questions

**Does the chassis brand under my coach change what a repair costs?**

Materially, yes. A Ford F53 rail chassis puts steel behind the front cap, so a low speed hit often ends at the bumper beam. A Freightliner or Spartan pusher has nothing forward but a molded mask and its cooling package in the rear cap, so the same impact reaches a radiator, a charge air cooler and frame extensions. That is why we ask for the chassis tag before quoting anything on a front or rear corner.

**My sidewall looks wavy in low sun but there is no impact damage. What is that?**

That is almost certainly delamination, meaning the adhesive bond between the outer fiberglass and the luan behind it has released. In the San Gabriel Valley it is driven as often by heat cycling in an uncovered lot as by a water leak. It is repairable by injection and re bonding when it is caught early and localized, and it becomes a panel replacement once the affected area spans a full bay.

**Can you match a full body paint coach without repainting the whole side?**

Usually. Full body coach paint is typically a three to five stage system, so we spray out a card, confirm the match under shop and daylight, and blend into the adjacent panels rather than cutting a hard edge at a body line. Where the original has faded unevenly, blending into an extra panel is the honest answer, and we say so in the estimate rather than discovering it in the booth.

**Do you handle the mechanical side of a motorhome as well as the body?**

No, and it matters that you know that before you book. We do not perform engine rebuild, transmission rebuild or drivetrain repair on any coach. Our scope is collision, body, paint, fiberglass, structural, interior and onboard systems: slides, levelers, generators, hydronic heat, roof air, plumbing and 12 volt and 120 volt electrical. Chassis driveline work goes to a chassis dealer.

**How long can a motorhome be in your shop, and where does it sit?**

A cosmetic panel and paint job is one to three weeks. A cap replacement or a structural repair on a 40 foot pusher is three to eight weeks, because molded caps are pulled to order and cure windows cannot be compressed. Coaches up to 45 feet stay inside the 35,000 square foot OCRV Center facility in Yorba Linda while they are in process rather than on a public lot.

**Is it worth bringing a coach 18.4 miles from Hacienda Heights for body work?**

For anything structural or paint related, yes, because the constraint is equipment rather than skill. A drive through booth long enough for a Class A, a frame measuring setup and a molded cap parts channel are not things a general body shop keeps.
