# Whether Filing Beats Paying Directly, at Your Deductible

Enter your deductible and the band for the work and this compares filing a claim against paying OCRV Center directly. Below a certain repair size a claim costs more than it recovers once the deductible and the premium consequence are counted.

## The arithmetic nobody does before calling their carrier

A $2,200 repair on a $1,500 deductible recovers $700. That $700 is bought with a filed claim on the policy record, and on a specialty vehicle policy a filed claim frequently moves renewal by more than $700 across the following three years. The claim is still the right call sometimes, and it is worth knowing which time this is.

The tool cannot know your carrier's rating behavior, so it reports the recovery figure and the break even repair size and leaves the renewal judgment to you. What it does reliably show is the zone where filing is clearly correct, which starts well above most owners' intuition.

## Where filing is almost always correct

Structural damage, water intrusion with framing involvement, and anything where the eventual scope is genuinely unknown at the outset. On those jobs the band is wide, teardown routinely doubles the visible damage, and paying directly means absorbing that discovery yourself. A claim exists precisely for the case where the number cannot be known in advance.

Where it is usually wrong: a single cosmetic panel, a bumper, an awning fabric, a decal set. Those have narrow bands, no discovery risk, and are frequently at or under a typical RV deductible. Paying directly also keeps the repair off the record entirely, which matters more on a coach than most owners realize at resale.

## Questions

**Will you tell me not to file a claim?**

Regularly, and it costs us the claim revenue when we do. An owner who files a $2,000 claim they should have paid directly comes back angry at renewal, and being right about the arithmetic in the first conversation is worth more than the job.

**Can I start out of pocket and file later if it turns out worse?**

Usually yes, but the documentation has to exist from the beginning, which is why we photograph and measure everything regardless of who is paying. Filing after a teardown that was not documented is the hardest kind of claim to get approved, and it is entirely avoidable.
