# Reading the signs before a Lippert leveling jack reads a fault that is not there

A Lippert leveling fault is usually voltage drop, a corroded frame ground or a curbed jack foot, not a dead controller. How to match the message against what the jack did, and repair at $350 to $6,500 across 2 to 25 hours.

## An error on the touch pad is a symptom with four common causes

The message on the panel is written for the shortest possible explanation, which is why it
misleads people. A leveling controller does not know what a jack is doing. It knows how
much current the jack is drawing, or what pressure the manifold is holding, and it knows
what the slope sensor inside the controller is reporting. Everything it displays is
inferred from those two or three numbers.

So a message about a stuck jack means current went somewhere the controller did not
expect. That happens when a jack is genuinely bound, and it also happens when supply
voltage sags under pump draw, when a ground connection has enough resistance to skew the
reading, when a solenoid clicks without shifting, and when a foot is sitting on a crowned
surface that loads it unevenly. Four causes, one message.

The expensive mistake is buying the part the message seems to name. Controllers and touch
pads are among the most needlessly replaced items on a coach. We regularly see units that
have had a new pad, a new controller, and the original fault, because nobody measured
voltage at the pump under load before the parts went on the account.

## Match the message against what the jack physically did

Before touching a meter, watch the sequence with somebody at the panel and yourself
outside the coach at a safe distance. Note which jack was moving, in which direction, at
what point in the cycle the fault appeared, and whether the pump was still running when it
did. Those four observations narrow the list faster than any code reader.

A fault that appears with the pump running and one jack barely moving points at hydraulics
or at that jack. A fault that appears the instant the pump loads, with nothing having
moved, points at electrical supply. A fault that appears near the end of the cycle, after
three jacks are already down, is nearly always the slope sensor objecting to the surface
rather than to the coach.

The physical checks that matter next are quick. Look at each foot for a bent pad, a
tweaked ram, or a scrape on the leading edge. Look at each jack casting where it bolts to
the frame for a hairline at the corner of the bracket. Look at the ground strap from the
frame to the pump for green powder under the lug. On a coach that has been in service five
years or more, one of those three is usually visible before any meter comes out.

## Voltage drop is the false fault that costs owners the most

A leveling pump is one of the heaviest 12 volt loads on the vehicle, and it pulls that
load through a long run of cable to a ground on a painted or corroded frame member. A
house bank that reads 12.6 volts at rest can drop below the controller's threshold at the
pump the moment all that current moves. The controller sees a supply problem, cannot tell
you that in three words, and reports the nearest thing it can.

The specific pattern to recognize: the system works perfectly on shore power and faults on
battery, or works in the morning and faults after two days parked, or works when the
engine is running and not otherwise. Any of those three is a supply story and no amount of
hydraulic work will fix it.

Southern California adds the ground problem. Coaches stored uncovered in LA County collect
enough moisture cycling and enough dust in the same joint to build resistance in a frame
ground over a few seasons, and the joints that fail are the ones nobody has ever
unbolted. It is the cheapest finding on this whole list and among the most common.

## A ground strap and a solenoid against a pump and four jacks

**Caught as an electrical fault.** Cleaning and remaking grounds, replacing a corroded lug,
or repairing a chafed run sits in 12 volt electrical repair at $285 to $5,000 plus across 1
to 20 hours, or wiring and fuse panel repair at $400 to $5,500 when the run back to the
panel is compromised. On many coaches this is a half day and it resolves the fault
permanently.

**Caught as a hydraulic or mechanical fault.** Solenoids, manifold work, seals, a leaking
ram, or a bound jack fall in leveling system repair at $350 to $6,500 plus across 2 to 25
hours. The band is wide because a single solenoid and a full pump assembly with four jacks
sit at opposite ends of it. Systems and electrical work runs 3 business days to 2 weeks on
the calendar.

**Caught after the bracket tore.** A jack that has been operated while bound, or one that
took a curb strike and kept getting cycled, eventually cracks the mount or the frame
outrigger it hangs from. That becomes structural welding and fabrication at $750 to $20,000
plus, and on a coach where the frame geometry moved, chassis repair and alignment at $1,500
to $9,000 comes with it. The fault message was the same on day one.

## Controller generations, calibration, and the Lippert order desk

Lippert leveling has gone through several generations of controller, and they are not
freely interchangeable. Electric jack systems and hydraulic systems use different logic
entirely, and within each family the sensor calibration procedure and the pad
communication differ by generation. The serial and model data on the controller and on the
pump is the order document. A coach model year is not enough.

Jack motors, solenoids, seal kits and pads generally move inside a week. Controllers and
complete pump assemblies are the calendar risk, typically 2 to 4 weeks and longer when a
generation has been superseded and a harness adapter is needed to fit the current part.
Superseded parts are the ones that turn a one week job into a month, which is why we
confirm availability during evaluation rather than after teardown.

The step owners forget is calibration. A replaced controller does not know where level is
until the zero point is set on a known flat surface, and a system calibrated on a crowned
storage row will report slope faults forever afterward. That is why this work finishes in
the shop on a level floor instead of wherever the coach happened to be parked.

## Where a leveling fault belongs in a collision claim

Wear on a solenoid, a scaled ram seal, or a corroded ground is maintenance and no carrier
pays for it. That is not a gray area and it is not worth a phone call.

Impact is a different file. Jacks get struck by driveway aprons, storage lot speed humps,
parking blocks and freeway debris, and a jack that was left partially extended when the
coach moved is one of the more common ways it happens. Those show a direction, a witness
mark and often a bent pad, and they are covered like any other collision item. Photograph
the obstacle as well as the jack.

The part that gets written out of scope is the consequence. When a strike bent a ram, the
controller often kept commanding the jack and the mounting bracket took the load for
weeks. The bracket, the frame outrigger and the alignment belong in the original scope on
day one. Added later as a supplement they get argued line by line. That call gets made at
teardown, priced at 1 hour at $210 and credited to an authorized repair.

## Four things to do before you buy a single part

First, note the exact message, which jack was moving, and whether the pump was still
running when the fault appeared. Second, run the cycle once on shore power and once on
battery alone and see whether the behavior changes, because that single comparison sorts
electrical from hydraulic. Third, look at every foot, every ram and every mounting bracket
in daylight and photograph anything bent, scraped or cracked. Fourth, check the frame
ground lug at the pump for corrosion.

Owner territory ends there. Cracking a hydraulic line, jumpering a solenoid, or working
under a coach supported only by its own leveling jacks are all bad ideas, and the last one
is the one that hurts people. Blocking, unloading the system and getting the coach on a
level floor are shop steps for a reason.
